Road Rage

Not me directly, but my Dad was subject to quite a serious case of it today. Makes me wonder how people can get so angry over such a little thing and actually make threats on someone elses life!

Basically, my Dad cycles to work every day as a way of keeping fit and saving fuel bills. He's been doing it for 20+ years now and is considerate of drivers on the roads, wears all the appropriate safety gear and is generally pretty careful. He was cycling along this morning when a Range Rover skimmed passed him at 70+ mph on a country road. Understandably he found this farely inconsiderate and showed his annoyance by waving a hand at the guy. It seems there was a little misunderstanding and the Range Rover proceeded to slam his brakes on and stop. The driver lept out and started shouting at my Dad demanding why he called him a ****. My Dad kindly explained that he had mearly gesticulated at the speed and closeness of his overtake to which this bloke called him a 'f***ing tosser in all his cycling gear who had no right to tell him how fast he can drive' and then went on to say that next time he'd 'make sure he drove into him and killed him and then claim he hadn't seen him'! ohmy.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> wacko.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Sadly my Dad didn't get the guys numberplate and let's face it, the police probably wouldn't be interested, and it would just be my Dads word against his. I just find it amazing though that someone can make such a serious threat against another person just because a hand was waved because of some dangerous driving.

typical exactly! i was on my way to recording once and some new range rover cut me up on the dual carriage way near the vw garrage in swindon, so i shouted you d**k head! he braked, went into the inside lane, pulled up beside me and started calling me a tosser and why dont i buy a real car!!! i could handle being called a tosser, but buy a real car!!!! oooo no!! my lupo is a real car!!! as he went to pull off i throw my half full mcdonalds vanilla milkshake at him, and it landed right on his side window. it was so good. me and my friend who was also there had a little chuckle. but yeah fooping 4x4 drivers. sorry if i kinda took over this thread. wink.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> blush.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

First of all I'm sorry to hear about your dads incident and hope he's ok.

I would like to point out though that gebuine 4x4 drivers (of which I have recently sold mine for the Loop) are not as some may of generalised in this thread. The 4x4 driver you refer to is the exact reason that ALL 4x4 drivers have a bad reputation. This guy being one of them. His car makes up for his small peni5 size. Genuine 4x4 drivers do not tear up the country side at ridiculous speeds and do actually appreciate they drive very heavy vehicles that can seriously damage other road users cars and drive repectfully thus. It annoys me almost as much as the story of this poor guy on his bike to hear generalisation comments like this.

Rant over and oce again sorry to hear about this unfortunate event.

yes actually i agree, is in the process of buying a series 3 land rover and so she has been buying 'land rover monthly' etc. ( <IMG SRC="style_emoticons/default/blink.gif"> style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> <IMG SRC="style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif"> style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> ) so i retract my statement. not ALL 4x4 drivers are rossers, the real 4x4 enthusiasts are, im sure very nice people. <IMG SRC="style_emoticons/default/smile.gif"> style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Right, once we've got past all the bullshit comments about dropping him and typical 4x4 drivers etc rolleyes.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Your dad did the right thing, both in gesticulating and in not taking any kind of physical action. You've got to hope (though it's probably pointless) that the guy will think about it later and realise he was out of order. I doubt that will happen, but you have to live in hope. If he had knocked the guy out, and the fella hadn't done anything back there and then he may well have reported your dad for assault and/or really knocked him off next time he came across him on the road.

I see so many cases of road rage on my journeys to and from work etc. It's getting all too common, and sadly alot of these people are prepared to take it way past hand waiving and shouting.

Although I disagree about your comments regarding the "bullshit 4x4 owner comments". The rest makes sense. One other thing to consider is should his father of pushed this or attacked (like suggested) this other guy whats saying his father wouldn't of come of worse? Or how do you know this guy isn't some local thug who isn't going to turn up at your door one night? You don't know who your dealing with in this day and age and to merely suggest you'd fight anyone on the street, that in my opinion is going to end one day in a bad situation.

Yeah I agree there's never any point in retaliating. The fact that my Dad was so calm about it all I think made the guy feel a bit of a tw*t. After he had finished swearing at my Dad he kind of just chickened out a bit and said 'well.....I guess we've both appologised so I'll leave it at that'. When you think about it as well, why else would he have looked in his mirror to see my Dad wave if he hadn't realised he'd maybe done something wrong. I feel fairly certain that he felt a bit guilty later one smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Why do you disagree? Do you really think that everyone buying one particular type of vehicle is the same? If so, we're all girls on here, cos that's the stereotype!

I agree that a good percentage of people with 4x4's have them for no good reason, but that doesn't mean we can say that they're all idiots etc etc.

I couldn't agree more about not reacting (tempting though it may be). Is it worth a dust up over something as stupid as that, and what if the idiot is carrying a knife or some other weapon?

My only problem is I don't know if I could sit back if someone punched me. I can take a lot of verbal, but the red mist descends when I get punched (unless it's obvious the person is a nutter or has a weapon).

But, the common sense approach is always not to react.

My misunderstanding, I actually posted the argument FOR 4x4 drivers if you read above. i thought you were another jumping on the "all 4x4 drivers are tossers" bandwagon.

Phew!! lol

Sorry to hear your Dad's had to suffer that kind of abuse. Range Rovers around here are driven by a pair of Geezers wearing too much 'bid-up' gold, sporting blue heads (close shaved) and thick necks. No doubt there's a Staffy in the back chewing on a baseball bat. I think that's in case you dis' their Mum.

Not that I'm generalising or anything.

I think you'll find that the "thugs" chosen dog of choice is no longer the Staff but rather the "American Bulldogge". Best thing that ever happened that, now proper Staff lovers can own their chosen breed without the unreal tag of devil dog owner. tongue.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Shame for the american bully though. Much as I'm an English Bulldog guy myself, the americans are really lovely animals.

Agreed. Personally though I think the Staff has suffered with it's untrue reputation for too long now. Most of the "fighting" breeds have excellent temperaments and are loving loyal dogs who have a particular soft spot for children. Unfortunately most people will never know this as they listen to narrow minded fools who don't have a clue what there talking about.

How far has this thread now wandered of topic? blush.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

i got waved at by a cyclist once on a rural road out of sheffield - but then the cyclist was a tosser as he was riding side by side (two abreast) next to his mate - leaving hardly any room to get past. Seemingly expecting cars just to sit behind at 5mph!

I just flashed me rear fogs and continued lol smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I agree that a properly trained Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a cracking pet, I know a couple of families with them. Unfortunately, there are a lot of (thinks for approriate word) nutters who think that a revved up one is a great addition to the trackies tucked into the socks with Rockports look. A lad at work boasted that his 'nearly killed' next doors dog and the owner was 'well upset'. Apparently it was because their dog was gay. Q.E.D.

To bring the topic a little way back to cycling and disgruntled motorists, it annoys me when those cycle club road races take place. I wouldn't mind, but I doubt they have insurance for 'racing on the road' and they certainly don't meet approval for use because they rarely have reflectors or bells.

They have every right to be on the road, so yes....you should have sat behind them at 5mph until it was safe to pass. Would you drive past another car on a blind corner leaving half a foot gap? Hopefully not...yet for some reason many drivers insist on doing this to bikes as if a cyclist is some kind of annoying moving chicane that means the usual highway code/common sense doesn't apply.

I admit that riding two abreast is fairly inconsiderate, but sometimes people do it to try and understandably stop people squeezing them out of the way. Bikes are both light and unstable at times, so scaring the sh1te out of someone by blasting past them at 70mph and sucking them accross the road with the draft of air is not funny.

Perhaps people should refer to the highway code a bit more often where it describes pretty clearly, how to overtake a cyclist.

Perhaps the cyclists should too...
