  1. Yeah i have noticed a distinct negative vibe about them. I think they should work if you wash and oil them, but then the renault 5 turbo filter i used on my TDI is the 1st one i have ever owned so i dont have a lot to back that up with. Shame i just forked out for the used k&n now eh, instead of waiting to see what is in the filter box when it arrives tomorrow. Didnt you have one in your SDI?
  2. Coil On Plug ignition, it's individual coil pack on each plug. http://www.aa1car.com/library/copign.htm
  3. Yay! Found one on the evil bay so stock air filter box and MAF box thingy arriving very soon. £30. Poss a used k n filter for it too, £20. Might actually put the arch liner back too.
  4. Try a diesel, they dont have coils.
  5. They will poke a lot on the front. Should clear the brake unless they have strange layout. I got some 14x7 et30 and they fit perfect, but then i dont like poke or excessive stretch. http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=185&aspect=55&diameter=14&wheelwidth=6&offset=43&width2=185&aspect2=55&diameter2=14&wheelwidth2=7&offset2=0#content
  6. The gearbox bell housing patterns are different on the blocks afaik. Your gearbox is 085 the gti is 02M. That's why they say easiest gti swap into a non gti is to use the Polo gti engine and 085 box (or your own i guess). There will be ways it can be done but in the end it makes it a darn sight easier to take the easy route . Lupo GTI block = 02M Polo GTI block = 085
  7. Nice. (apart from all the flowers) What's up with the gearbox? No idea on price but you'd probably do better to get it fixed with a second hand box.
  8. Given the alternatives that is a good outcome.
  9. Gawd, been reading up on these boxes... SMS, self machining syndrome. the diffs are shite in these boxes. that is all. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4165769
  10. Well, the crank cog took a pounding all right it had spun on the crankshaft and turned brown with the heat. No wonder it wasn't round any more, it had to haul itself over the flat bits. Crank should clean up, main bearings are shot, big ends are not the best either. So it's looking like it's for parts. I'm investigating balance shaft delete for my own AMF engine now, this one was a 2008 BNV.
  11. Interesting. What had failed do you know?
  12. That doesnt sound like a clutch problem, if you can get a gear with the clutch down and you get different noises depending on what gear you are in when the clutch is up then it is at the least on the output shaft of the gearbox, final drive or as said a drive shaft. I cant see a sudden failure without prior warning noises tbh.
  13. Chances are high it is just a resistor mod to force higher fuelling. Looks like it goes on the coolant sensor and will force the ecu to think the engine is cold so it runs the higher fuel map as a result. I doubt the figures given though if so. Nothing at all like a remap and best avoided.
  14. Well it's either a simple chain failure or else the tensioner failed followed shortly after by the chain. I'll clean up the tensioner bits and chain and have a closer look at them. The pulsing of the 3 pot engine is not well suited to a chain drive on the balance shaft and as the oil pump is on there too then it can be catastrophic if the chain fails for whatever reason. The 4 pot tdi has smoother pulses but even so it is a poor design. Mileage was about 170k on this engine btw. I'm just hoping they havent driven it home when it failed with the oil light on.
  15. I bought a spare TDI engine el cheapo with oil pump chain failure last week, basically it will cost me nothing and i'll be in profit just selling the gearbox off it. I assumed it was toast and just got it for educational purposes and i wanted a spare head to port so no big deal if it is totally knackered, but i will repair it if the bearings are all ok, the turbo is shagged so not a good sign. I spotted this 1st off: That's a crack and 2 holes in the cover. Improvised crank locking tools. Fookin tight!. tricky on my tod. Pully off and cleaned up a bit. Cover off and pic from underside. The chain was smashed into pieces. Crack shaft cog was distorted and cracked. Spot the screw head.... Sump off. These bits came out of the plastic baffle. (not the chain). The balance shaft weight has smashed the tensioner body. Edit: Correction, I think the only shaft with enough torque to cause this damage is the crank shaft, so it was chain bunching between the crank cog and the tensioner body that smashed the tensioner off downwards and ripped the tooth on the crank cog. The screw heads are sheared right off and it is jammed in the cogs and the balance weight. 3 mounting screws still in the block. That's it for now, i'll take the balance shaft off and then take main bearing and big end caps off and see what damage is done there another time. Part 2: Tensioner is supposed to look like this:
  16. Have you tightened up the hinge pin bolts? Small 5mm (?) hex under small black cap on each hinge. That cured my very saggy drivers door.
  17. Generally the "unsafe" comment regarding your engine was that if the belt broke the valves will hit the pistons. Some engines are "safe" in that if the belt breaks the valves do not hit the pistons, meaning it's no big disaster and cheap and easy to fix. You could slap a new belt on and do a compression test to check for bent valves. You'd need to rotate the engine at least twice by hand as part of the belt installation to make sure the timing is right so badly bent valves would likely show up then as it would be difficult to turn it over. It's going to be expensive unless you can do it yourself or get mates rates from someone you know. You are looking at hundreds of pounds depending on the extent of the damage. Sorry.
  18. The GTI box just has close ratios so the 6 speed ends up similar ratio to the 5 speed, it's not an "extra" gear in that box, just more spread. You'd need to know the gearbox code for whatever box you are thinking about and look up the ratios to see if it will do what you intend. Also petrol boxes will tend to be more revvy anyway. There's a tall 5th mod on the 02j box just replace the 5th with a taller one, (access thru the end cover gearbox in situ i think) or the 02r jdd bluemotion box seems to fit the tdi at least on the A2s.
  19. Might be a bit late to say this but do a compression test before spending loads of dosh on shiney new bits. The connectors arent very intuitive no, you just have to work out what needs levering and which way, the handy slot on the connector and the little tab sticking out on the coil pack connector means you need to lever the plug over the tab, usually a screwdriver gently levering the plug body up over the tab applied while pulling on the plug. You can do it with no tools if you can get enough leverage and traction with your thumb to make the plug body get over the tab.

  21. I was reading about this on a2 forums a couple of months back, there's a conversion kit that is expensive, I cant remember if there was another option like the gti box, probably not, the other favoured mod for economy was the JDD bluemotion box with long 5th. Why do you want the 6 speed? Oh, ok there's this: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?25919-New-6-speed-gearbox-method-passat-11-onwards-MYP-gearbox
  22. http://bangernomics.tripod.com/oilypolo.htm Crank case breather blocked and / or oil separator thingy. Petrol or diesel (as that oil looks black)?

    Downpipe Decat

I'd probably give this a go if it were me: http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f154/how-make-decat-pipe-stock-cat-60454/ No idea about MOT time though and emissions impact on petrols....
  24. If you need the car on the road asap then find a good second hand box (check the gearbox codes to get suitable gear ratios) and fit that. You could then choose to open your box and see what the problem is, chances are it is the output shaft bearing that can be had for a few quid, you will need some tools and ingenuity to remove and fit the bearing or take it somewhere to get it done for another few quid. If it has just started whining you could try slightly thicker oil than specced and see it that shuts it up and also over fill it by 300 - 500ml. This will be a temporary measure, but could buy you some time.
