  1. if you've lost 1st, 3rd and 5th at the same time i would have thought cable adjustment, can be done from under the bonnet and takes about 1 minute. there are only 2 cables and i think the one your after is the lower one and it needs to be shortened (get someone to move the lever whilst you look at the cables), slide the collar back against the spring and push the cable in, release collar and your done
  2. well i tried cable adjustment with no luck, also changed the oil with no luck so went to a gearbox specialist. specialist says it could be the selector mechanism in the box and that they can change it in the car.... just wait and see
  3. i've got a place in sussex gardens so about 200 yards away from her! i'll say hello when i see you next or if you see my car on my drive just nock on the door and say hello Russell
  4. i know oil breaks down when old (goes thin/runny) and also gets thinner when hot. as an auto box relies on oil pressure to change gear it might be a good idea to change the oil if it hasnt been done. a friend had a transporter automatic and it wouldnt select gears, found the oil cooler had split and filled the box with water, the van wouldnt move unless on the flat! we changed the oil and could get it to move so changed it over and over as it still had water in it and eventually it would select all gears but i think the water did some damage as gear selections were a bit harsh, in the end we changed the box.
  5. ok i'm having trouble! no nosie and goes into 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th fine reverse can be slightly tricky to select but i put that down to me my problem is 3rd gear, dip the clutch and slide it into gear easily, the gear lever goes past the syncro fine but doesnt always go all the way home and select 3rd, basically a nats bits short of full throw of the lever and lift the clutch and find it grinding, back to neutral, back into gear, lift the clutch and find out if it made it into gear! i think its either adjustment of the gear selector or an internal problem (will change the oil as a hope) any ideas?
  6. that would be me! and not suprising you saw me there as i have a house in the next road
  7. my average is 200miles per tank even when driven a bit hard. this works out to about 34miles to the gallon. maybe if your trying to get banned, overtake at any risk and drive like a total C**k you could get that to about 30miles to the gallon. this in my mind is amazing for the performance. my old Pug 306 averaged 20 to 25 miles to the gallon but then it was a bit quicker.

    1.6 16v Turbo?

many people here will tell you the 1.6 16v engine cant take much power but i find this hard to beleive. i have a 1.3 mini, the engine design dates back to 1950 were it had 35bhp and the most powerfull version without a turbo was in the metro and that had 70 ish bhp, the metro turbo had 90bhp and i've got over 150bhp and some have over 200bhp slapping a turbo on is cheap, sorting the emissions is not so cheap
  9. normaly i do about 20,000 miles a year in the lupo gti and about 2,000miles in the mini.
  10. i've never had a problem with the standard brakes. i had a Pug 306 rallye and that was fine with standard brakes but i fitted EBC dics and pads and they were crap. i also have a mini and the brakes fade every time i go for a drive. if you have had brake fade are you using VW discs and pads?

    Black GTI

spotted a Black GTI yesterday near the BMW Mini dealer in Tadworth. could have been the one i saw a few months back going towards epsom from Tolworth.
  12. lets face it, a standard GTI either 5 or 6 speed (mine a 5 speed) will do 16.0sec give or take a small bit. anything done by a £2.99 G meter is just an estimate and any faster on a proper drag strip and the car cannot be standard. to get 0.5sec faster you need quite a bit more power and you wont get it from an air filter i have a 1970 mini van and they do about 20sec 1/4mile as standard. i did a 14.1 @100.6 mph but i dont claim it to be standard. this year i hope for mid 13sec the lupo gti is nippy, fun, cheap on fuel and cheap on insurance, its fast enough for what it is but its no super car. if it was that fast i would be dead as i feel a need to use all the power a car has.
  13. my friends mini does 15.5sec and i tried racing him (on a private road officer) and just lost every time. i would estimate the GTI to do high 15's/low 16's and thats standard except the BMC
