Fiberglass/plaster repair?

Recommended Posts

Removed the vinyl wrap from the mirrors and decided to test fit one (of course, attempted it in the dark again)

Anyway, tightened the bolt one turn too much and broke a large chunk from the base plate.

It looks like is plaster on the inside, and fiberglassed on the edges.

Any of you DIYers out them give me any tips on how I can repair it?

Many thanks in advance

Just to add, I have managed to salvage the piece that has broken off.

I know it would be easy to bond it back in place and glass overthe top, what I would like to do though is strenthen it for when I bolt it back on.

I have fiber glass, alu fiber and some boat building resin at home.

What I dont know is how the best way to repair it is.

With the inside being plaster, I didn't know if this needed bonding before sdkimming over with glass?

I would use some car body adhesive sealer tobond the 2 parts together then glass over the top of them!

It might be worth cutting a hole in some fine mesh and putting that over the bonded part and glassing over that, that should make it nice and strong...and dont fit it in the bloody dark!

Fiberglass matt and resin with not too much hardener so its not brittle and while your doing that drill the holes out bigger and use bolts to bolt the mirrors on and fiberglass some nuts onto the other side of the base plate

would work and would be solid but if youve brought em new return them as a defective item for the money they cost

Ok, turned out it wasn't plaster with a glass fiber skin.

Its a type of polistirine.

Used some basic super glue which has done the job very nicely.

Skimmedover with a layer of matt.

Seems as strong as ever.

Nice one Matig for using plastic for the insides!

Cheers for the advice guys.
