Lupo TDI not starting - Update!

Recommended Posts

You're welcome. Glad to hear it's running, but i'd still like to know why it went wrong in the first place. Very odd.

I,m curious as well and hope to investigate further at some point but at the moment I,m just happy that it is going!

I,ve looked on some specialist ECU repair sites and one of them has a section for common ecu faults for various makes - under VW diesels it lists exactly the symptons that I experienced! The fuel pump relay is more than just a simple relay and is linked to lots of other bits so will try swapping it when I manage to find a spare (VW want £50 for a new one!)

Hi all,

Ive got exactly the same symptoms on my 2002 Lupo TDi - Turning over fine but not firing and no glow plug light coming on.

I have been hunting around, the only relay that clicks is "100" the load relief relay (i think) I have tried swapping relays 109, 103 and 405 with either brand new or "good" second hand units with no success the other relays in that panel are not to do with engine stuff (i don't think...) but are there any relays elsewhere in the car? all the fuses in the fuse panel are fine. One of my friends had the same symptoms with a mk4 golf which turned out to be a water damaged edu so i opened up my ECU and no obvious problems there.

I bought a copy of elsawin to try and get the wiring diagrams coz without them this is basically a joke but when i installed it all i get is "db-open-error" so still can't get to the diagrams!!!

Can anyone help? either with the diagrams or with suggestions about where to measure/if i'm missing any other fuses or relays. This is doing my head in!!!!

Hopefully Rich or Jon will give you a detailed answer but in the meantime:

The same symptoms on our 2001 Lupo TDI caused me real headaches. I had half the car apart checking everything I could think of before Rich suggested that for some reason the ECU power module had lost the live feed - this turned out to be correct and was solved by his suggestion of a fused live feed direct to the ECU. I did this via a fused relay operated by a separate switch on the dash and the car has now run fine for several months and lots of miles (just need to remember to switch it off again when parked).

Like you I looked at all the wiring diagrams but there are so many interlinked signals going in to the ECU that without a full schematic I decided that it was going to be beyond my capabilities and I suspect that it is down to an internal ECU fault.

Hope you get it fixed!

So I have a small update to add about my experiences to help others that may face the same symptoms.

I managed to get hold of some wiring info which was invaluable. Relay 109 feeds the main power to the ECU via fuse 37. Positive on the switch side of the relay is tied internally to Battery +ve, negative of the switch side is connected to ground through the ECU. The ECU should receive an ignition feed in order to enable the ground to the relay and switch itself on - this is not happening.

I was able to get the car running by bypassing relay 109 (connect relay pin30 to pin87) which provides a constant feed to the ECU.

From the diagram I have it's unclear where the ignition feed to the ECU comes from (any help/diagrams welcome!), but it's likely that this is fine and the fault is internal to the ECU on the ground switching/enable circuitry.

I will keep chasing the root cause of this, but for now I will do similar to what KermitGirl has done and add an ignition fed relay to bypass relay 109.

Also if anyone has a cheap TDi ECU to sell, please let me know!

Pleased to hear you got it going - if you ever manage to discover the underlying problem please let us all know!

I have decided not to bother investigating any further as long as Kermit is running OK (too busy messing about with old motorcycles)

BTW as far as I know you will need the 4 digit code to enable you to swap ECUs (unless someone knows differently)

I was hoping I could swap the immo chip between the ECUs. I know this is soldered internal to the ECU but I work with electronics and removing/resoldering the chip I could do with my eyes closed.

If anyone knows a reason this wouldn't work then please let me know.

I will definitely update this thread if I find any more info on this - it seems to be a fault which has cropped up several times so it would be nice to find the root cause + solution in case other people face the problem in the future. It can be a real pain to debug this kind of thing!

I'm liking the sound of this. Mark, if you eventually do this would you mind taking a few photos of which components etc? There's no reason I can think of right now assuming you do a full transplant.

Mark, that sounds worth a try. As I said I am fairly sure that these problems are due to an internal fault in the ECU and I considered sending mine away to be tested but decided that I did not trust any company to give me an honest answer (it is obviously more profitable to say that repairs were needed). If you look at the some websites eg http://www.ecutesting.com/vw_common_ecu_failures/edc16u_ecu_golf_caddy_touran_transporter.html

you will see that one of the most common reported VW ecu faults shows exactly these symptons.

Will be interested to see your progress with this.
