Smelling Petrol

When i got in form work today i could smell fuel or some sort of weak petrol type of smell in my car.

i had put my foot down on the way home from work after she was warmed up and i only got to about 100mph tops, so i was between about 70 and 100 mph for no more than 5 miles of the journey. Anyway when i hit the 30 zone i had my window down and i could smell fuel, i put the window up thinking it may have been outside. So when i got home i could still smell it in the cabin, i popped the bonnet and had a look in there and i couldn't see anything wet or even smell anything (yes i was smelling in my engine!). So i decided to have a look under the car, around and near the fuel tank, i still couldn't see anything althought i could smell it. Im a bit worried, but im hoping there is a reasonable explanation for it. This also isn't the first time it has happened, the first time i thought nothing of it, but i thought i'd find out what was going on this time.

Could it be the fuel filter? bearing in mind its only done 10k or could it be the fuel pump? im really not sure so any info or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

My fuel filter went last week.

For a week or so beforehand I was paranoid that I could smell petrol, but no signs of leakage.

Thought I was going mad then it went big style, streaming out!

Was only £15 to change it, so worth a quick check.

i don't have a bmc fitted, but i will get my fuel filter looked at. would i be able to locate and check it myself or is it a job for a garage? how many miles did you car have on zippy? also will it be covered under warranty?

Dont think theyre covered by warranty, but are meant to be done at annual services (I think).

Besides, its probably easier to pay the pennies than deal with VW trying to get out of doing the work under warranty.

Thats if it is the fuel filter!

Its located on the drivers side, just in from the front of the rear wheel (if that makes sense...).

My motors got 28k miles now, but it's 3 1/2 years old, and I reckon it would be time that would cause the corrosion rather than usage.
