Yepp this has been asked numerous amount of times.. Get a performance air filter and race exhaust,, Nothing else will help unless you want to spend £200 on 8bhp if you do, get it re-mapped :)

If you are competent with the tools then the est bang per buck is with a polo gti engine

Considering the derv is a 3 pot he would have to get a full manifold made up, plus I don't think diesel turbos are set up to take a higher revving petrol engine

It has been discussed before on another thread and in sure it was said that it would sit wrong and as you said would majorly foul the bonnet

Theres not realy anthing thats worth doing.. if you want a fast car a 1.4 lupo is not realy for you. although as mentioned above induction kit and exhaust system with a remap could gain around 10bhp max ,and depending how handy you are with a tool kit a sport gearbox has lower ratios so will get up to speed faster (not top end though)

money would be much better spent on coilovers, poly bushes and uprated brakes

Dont waste your money on the engine... its pointless! spend it on some good coilovers, nice wheels and things to make it look better... get air if you have enough money
