foxy
Re-fitted the gearbox today, bolted everything up and connected all the electrics that had been taken apart for gearbox removal. When I connected this cableThe red one, something in the throttle body clicked and made a noise. All the ignition lights are on even though the key isnt in and when i start the engine i cant switch it back off. Have to disconect the wire again.Even stranger is, without the cable connected everything appears to work fine.Any ideas please because im totally lost Edited July 31, 2010 by foxy

foxy
Just been and checked, it is the power for the aircon. I've just fitted a new relay because that was causing the aircon to not work. Now it works with that cable connected. But why the he'll would that cause all the dash lights to come on and not be able to switch the engine off? A faulty relay? jonnykell1980
havent trapped some wires have you? shorting circuits?
northwick
I'll keep my eye on this, given we have exactly the same aircon problems and have both tried to replace the relay. My aircon specialist reckoned that if a new relay didn't fix it then it would probably be a broken/melted wire somewhere. A broken wire would cause a short circuit perhaps and therefore possibly the symptoms you describe? Was your old relay showing signs of water ingress? northwick
What part number relay have you used? Maybe its not the right one? There are several ones with the same numbers but a different letter suffix (as per here: http://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=53585&st=0&p=662565&%29)
foxy
The old relay showed signs of corrosion on the terminals and inside on the circuit board. The one i bought has exactly the part number as the origional, although its not a genuine part. Are you having the same dash lights coming on and engine not switching off problem? northwick
No but I haven't actually checked whether the 'fuse' is broken under that cover yet. I'll be doing that tomorrow. My old relay looked fine. Gonna investigate a bit more tomorrow by swapping them round and seeing if its exactly the same effect and checking that the radiator fan comes on with them both. jonnykell1980
it does sound like a short of some sort, either melted or trapped wires. possibly water ingress into a main harness connector or fusebox.
jon_273
Bad earths sometimes give problems like that. Phil had earthing problems and his car did all sorts of weird electrical things
jonnykell1980
that might make sense you taken a main earth off doing the box?
foxy
Today the problem has changed, it no longer putws the dash lights on and stop the engine from switching off, now it is stopping the central locking from working. and when i say central locking i mean the remote isnt working, key in the lock and the button on the door still opperates all the locksive took the main earth from the chassis leg to the engine off and given it a good clean up, then i noticed some corrosion on the power cables and connectors in that box in the photo ^^ so ive cleaned all that up aswell. Still made no difference. Edited August 1, 2010 by foxy
99hjhm
Foxy..... Most of the stuff in the engine bay is earthed in the NSF wheel arch on the front of the chassis leg, pita to get too, but might be worth cleaning them up.

99hjhm
already done. discovered another fault today. Electric windows no longer go down with 1 press, have to keep the button heldahh.. Mine goes wrong all the time, just drop the window to the bottom and hold the switch down for two seconds(Hear a little click), then wind it back up and hold the botton for 2 seconds(Hear another click) should be fine again then. Pete
I'd say with all the electrics off you may need to reset your power windows mate, holding the switch till it goes all the way down, then back up again may sort it. Happens all the time with mercs and thats how we sort it.
