Boxing/Martial Arts/Fighting of sorts.

As part of my new keep fit regime I'd like to take up some form of martial arts/boxing again.

Anyone on here do any forms of martial arts and what not? And if so what do you like about it...

When I was younger I did a bit of basic boxing training, a bit of sparring learning how to punch, how to defend, the correct stance, never got in the ring properly though. I quite fancy getting back into it and getting more involved, so if anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears. I found boxing to be incredibly good exercise.

boxing training is awesome lots of fitness..aswell as MMA .. i think if you go to a bjj class or judo say.. i dont think it will be as demanding as a thai boxing or mma class... well not in my experience dude.. good luck be careful of injuries.

Thai in my eyes is probably the best for conditioning and general fitness, wrestling is always a killer to for cardio.

If your wanting contact details for jamies club , let me know .

TBH your not going to get much better than training with him , abdul and hassan if thats the route your wanting to go down.

Boxing clubs are a funny breed, alot of clubs only want kids in and teach them up , the rest of the time for everyone else its just going between bags and the odd occasion of getting to go on the pads with the coaches.

The reason why I've preferred boxing is because I've never felt agile enough for more specialist martial arts. A few friends go to Redcar Amateur Boxing Club and they've been trying to persuade me to get back into it.

What's Jamie's club called? I've heard of a few places in South Bank but I have to be careful where I go due to work and my 'clients'.

I've been starting running and playing football again over the past ooh, week or so, to try and build up my fitness and on Friday I've put my back out at work. So gotta see what the Doctors say tomorrow before I commit to anything!

i boxed for 12 years and had 39 amateur fights but due to poor eye sight i lost my medical to box so decided to pass my coach,s license but kept training as well, its an awesome way to keep fit and condition the body but takes so much dedication especially if you want to compete i stopped 2 years ago due to working long hours and not being able to fit it in, i miss it and the fitness side so bad

I do Muay Thai kick boxing and its a brilliant work out and vents frustration/anger!

Try get into a womens only group, I'm sure you'd enjoy it ;)

My gf also does thai , she loves it , but hates training with me as ill hassle her until she is doing something exactly right .

Dubsy that sucks big time having to stop after that many am fights , were you looking at pro contracts too?

Good call getting your badges though, it would have been a waste to not be able to pass on the experience you had learnt over that time, its dam fulfilling to seeing students doing well.

Jonnykelley , ever man and his dog is now a cage fighter, most have never even been in there or only plan to, believe me ive been told loads of names and nvery rarely do they show up on any databases with a pro record. Most arent clever enough to realise its a very very small scene where everyone knows just about everyone and nearly all fights are recorded on databases that are very easy to search , thats whys its cringe.

i did think about it but really i just loved being involved with the club and being ringside shouting on my stable mates a few of them turned pro but its a really hard life there is no room for beer, girls and cars thats why so many young boxers leave in their teens as they discover new distractions so much young talent in this country is wasted in this way

I'd agree with you. Thai gyms are much more open (on the whole) to new people coming in and joining in.

Thai's no good if you have weak knees though...that's what I learnt the hard way :coffee:

All the boxing gyms I've trained at they either bang you on the bags with a little pad work or if they think you're decent they put you in with their 'decent' lads and let them go hard on you.

The reason boxing has always been my first choice is because I enjoy the sport on a whole. Actually fighting is of little interest to me, to me it's just a more interesting way to keep fit than running and going to the gym.

Muay Thai kick boxing sounds good but I have long skinny legs. I get the feeling they'd go ker-snap! Haha.

That old chestnut , believe me even now with it being commercially viable now its still very hard to get any kind of sponsorship even from clothing brands never mind anyone to send you to america to fight. I've learnt in this sport to take whatever people say with a major pinch of salt , hell there is even a ufc fighter who is on one of the events later this year who still tells major lies about his record and fight history.

No i never said that but having been in the sport for a considerable time now i am giving you a very educated answer on the subject, its your choice to accept that or just ignore it. Why dont you pop onto sherdog which stores most pro fights fought anywhere in the world and type his name in, maybe he has maybe he hasnt.

Who's that, 'The Count'?

No no he is legit as they come. Different fighter, james Mcsweeny , funny thing is he trains under greg jackson now , probably one of the best about.
