My car is dead.

After quite a while with my EPC and ENGINE CHECK light on and a few hundred miles my car died on me the other day, it was as if it lost all power completly. When i put my foot on the accelertor it reacted like the brake. I dont really know what to about it now as it was supposed to be getting me upto fort william next weekend so i really need it fixed before then? On another note, the garage i have used in the past is overpriced and everything seems to take a lifetime to get done. Anyone have any ideas or anyone in the tayside area want to have a bash at gettng it back to life?

I cant live without my car, i miss the funny looks i get and the heads iv turned in ferrari's.

Not sure about VW specialists in Dundee, but you'd be better off asking on SVAG.

Yeah i thought as much, but was going off what a local mechanic whos always sorted my cars before had said about the weather recently playing a part in it. Have asked on svag and a few things have been put forward just need to try and get it to the garage...

Get it plugged into Vagcom and get the fault codes read. I think when your EPC light comes on your car loses a lot of power anyway, runs on 70% or am I talking crap?? Get the codes read anyway so you know whats wrong.

same happened in my golf but traction control light came on aswel dont know if lupos have them, then it started back firing, but id used different fuel and was told by a mechanic to put normal fuel in and it sorted itself

Not on a Lupo.

VAG-COM!!!! You will have the answer in seconds.

These lights came on the GFs sport yesterday, but then went off by themselves. That isnt how yours started is it?

Yeah mate thats a bit how mine started, its going into the garage tomorrow as i have no access to vagcom and i really need the car for the weekend. Was speaking to a guy tonight at work and he had a very similar problem on his polo, his was sorted in 2 hours... fingers crossed anyway.

The garage have just been in touch and have told me that its the timing belt that has gone and im looking at possibly above £500. Is this generally the sort of price i will be looking at. Has anyone any recomendations of where to get the work carried out or even anyone wanting a homer?

Also should i get a 2nd opinion on whats needing done as iv been in the position before where i have gone places and they didnt know how to fix it so they replaced the whole thing?

What do you guys think?

My EPC light came on a few weeks ago and it deffinatly feels like its lost alot of power, so i think your right, feels like a lot more then 30% decrease for me tho lol

im doing the same as you though sean, driving it still which im sure many people do, just cant afford to get anything sorted atm, hoping its just something simply :lol:

Wow wow wow, the timing belt has gone?! Can this not damage the valves or am I talking hot steamy smouldering sh*te? When did you have your belts last changed? I had mine done in March I think it was at VW and I have a 2 year guarantee, so I assume if anything goes wrong with mine they are liable, not sure about your position :huh:

I felt like I was driving a 1L the time it happened to me, left my house, drove to the top of the hill (which was a struggle!), switched it off and back on, and for some reason the light was gone and everything fine. This has only happened once and this was months ago, so something probably upset it for a split second!

I was just under £300 for a service, MOT and timing belt change at the VW Specialist in Perth. Think the belt change was about £150, but that was for my 1.0.

Tha Gti was about £500 for the same last year.

funny enough after posting on this thread i went out for a drive, and what should happen, EPC light goes off, strange i thinks has its been on all but a few minutes for about 3 weeks now.

now ive posted on here im gonna assume its gonna come back on now :D

nothing to do with the light itself depends on the fault causing the light may make it loose power i drove round with my epc light on for a while with no effect but that was only a brakelight switch

1400 and 1600 same belts tensioners etc the qoute of 500 will be labour to remove head and inspect repair stuff damaged i'd think
