bigkingdingaling
There is a whirring noise that I can hear whilst driving. The noise seems to be coming from Dash/Engine part of the car and seems to become louder the faster I go.Friend reckons it could be the speedo cable, but the speedo seems fine.Any ideas??Cheers in advancedDavey
Defcon5
Sure its not the gearbox whining?
bigkingdingaling
Sure its not the gearbox whining?Ooh sounds bad.... how can I tell if it is?And what needs to be done if it is??Cheers
Defcon5
Not sure how you could pinpoint it to the gearbox tbh. Does it do it out of gear, and is it rev or speed or throttle position dependant?
blackcat
Ooh sounds bad.... how can I tell if it is?And what needs to be done if it is??CheersTry chucking it into neutral when driving and if it goes away you know it's gearbox related, otherwise could be wheel bearing! bigkingdingaling
Driving home doing 60 in 5th about 3000rpmcould hear the whirringknocked it into neutral whirring noise quickly died down.So I revved whilst in neutral and the whirring noise came and died along with the revsAs I was in neutral at that point am I safe in saying it could be the revometer/ revometer cable???Davey
Unheard
Cam belt tensioner would be my bet. It could also be the auxiliary belt tensioner. Edited May 21, 2009 by Unheard

Mitchell
the lupo has no rev cable! and no speedo cable. i think its a belt tensioner.
Mitchell
a wheel bearing is a rumble/deep whine that is best found by sitting at 50 ish disengage gear and freewheel the rumble will die down with the speed of the car decreasing. if the whirring is there when the engine is revved at stand still it's more than likely a tensioner. By that I mean Get my dad to do it....TaI just did a cambelt kit change on my AVY engine before inserting back into the gti. There are 3 sections to take off before you gain access to any tensioners.I think accessing this area with engine in is quite difficult as you have the middle section attached to the engine mounting.Could be different on your model. What mileage has the car covered, has it had cambelt changed, is it due for one? Maybe buy the kit and change the whole whilst your thinking of just doing the tensioner.I too am an IT geek bro, but you gotta get your hands dirty sometime!
