From the DVLA Personalised Registrations website

Are there any restrictions to the year of registration number I can choose?

You can make your vehicle look as old as you wish but you can not make it look newer than it actually is i.e. You cannot put a Y registration number on a T registered vehicle but you could choose any prefix from an A to a T.

It matters not the year of the vehicle, just the actual registration mark

Knew it wasn't right when you first posted it up.

The new plates don't come out til February or March or something anyway, so some cars (like yours) will be an early 2002, hence 51 plate.

Doubt they'll let you keep it on the car. You can't make a car look newer than it is.

It sucks if they let you do it in the first place, it should have been picked up at the point where you went in to register it to the car, and declined then. I'd be wanting them to pay retention/transfer fees etc since they made the mistake of letting it go on the car in the first place. £105 for retention and transfer fee combined.
