dlyall
Does anyone know if the 1.0 is an interference engine or not? Ours is coming up to 38K in 4 years but there's no specific interval for changing the cambelt. The dealer says that they only have to inspect annually after 5 years. I'd rather it didn't let go and cause a large amount of damage but at the same time I don't want to throw money away changing it too early hence the question. If it's not an interference engine I don't have much to worry about if the belt breaks.Has anyone had the belt changed on a 1.0? How much was it and are there any other things worth doing at the same time?TIADave
stevewp
And haven't yet, as ours has done barely over 30k. Also, sadly, I haven't got my laptop with me today or tomorrow so can't check whether it's an interference engine or not (hope someone else can answer that). However, normally the rule of thumb with cambelts is 60k. I recently did mine on my Passat at about 65k (oops) and it looked mint, so I doubt you've anything to worry about yet. However, for how cheap it'll be, it's maybe worth doing. tdwindustries
All Lupos are variable cam belt - if they need changing, they need changing. The Lupo has known issues with the cam belt tensioner (all models) where it disintegrates.I would say get it done
stevewp
Is it worth changing the tensioner too Tim?
tdwindustries
OOps sorry, yes that would be a good idea style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />This is all based on a) my car (GTI) style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> my local VW specialist who has seen loads of Lupos for damaged/very dangerous tensioners c) VW service info (from Andi on various threads!) stevewp
Cheers Tim. Might start to look at this in the spring (can't see there being a problem yet).Hope it's ALOT easier than the cambelt on the Passat - whole of the front of the car has to come off!! noddy
well if its anything like the 1.4 lupo the left engine mount has to come off so you have to prop up the engine but its not that hard style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> . vw charge about 340 or maybe more cant remember
stevewp
HOW MUCH??? That's extortionate.
dlyall
Just spoke to Wayside in MK. They quoted £210+VAT to change the belt and tensioner which isn't too bad. The water pump doesn't need changing unless it's leaking as it has a metal impeller anyway. They couldn't answer whether or not it was an interference engine. stevewp
That's still sooo expensive. I guess I don't know excatly what's involved, but I really can't see it being more than changing all the belts was on the Passat. Just goes to show how much dealers charge for labour! stevewp
Seriously?? What sort of mileage had you done each time?
LINCOLNSHIRESLUPOGTI
TDW is exactly right about the tensioner. They are a plastic/composite on the Lupo and are known to break-up and fail. I had mine changed and both cambelts at 45000 miles when I had the headwork done.Think the water pump impellor problem was on the 1.8T was it not? The plastic impellor becomes brittle over time and then cracks and fails causing water pump failure. My mates 1.8T X reg Golf had the water pump impellor failure. Petes 16V Sport
my cars got 45k on it, should I be thinking of looking at the cambelt? *worried*
stevewp
Definately think I'll change belt and tensioner in the spring. Is there a better tensioner that can be fitted rather than the plastic/composite rubbish one? dvfmlfc
My old MK1 Arosa 1.0MPI had a waterpump leak. Got waterpump and timing belt changed. Car had done 45K, but was advised the timing belt should've last another 20,000 miles.Head gasket still went!!!Andy
LINCOLNSHIRESLUPOGTI
Is there a better tensioner that can be fitted rather than the plastic/composite rubbish one? When VW did both my cambelts at 45000 they also changed the tensioners (and they explained the problem as at the time I was not sure how true the stories about it were). VW supply metal tensioners in place of the plastic/composite ones that are fitted to the cars from new.Cannot remember but seem to think for 2 cambelts and the tensioner kit it was £70ish. I paid no labour as they were doing the head at the same time but asked them how much the cambelt change was out of curiosity and they said about £350 style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />
stevewp
Oh well, at least they're replacing it with metal ones now
