  1. 1.0 is fine as a first car. We had one as a second car and did about 39k over 4.5 years with very few issues. It's quite capable of staying with motorway traffic but it does lack overtaking power so if you do lots of A/B road driving you may want a 1.4 but the insurance will be quite a bit higher. We sold ours to a 20 year old girl from London and the cheapest quote she could get was £800. IRC, she couldn't even get a quote for a 1.4 so that may be an issue. With regards to the designations, E is the base model - manual windows & mirrors, no rear speakers, no central locking. If it's an older one it'll have black mirror housings. Ours was a 2001 and had body coloured mirrors but black door handles S got electric windows & mirrors, more speakers, central locking, possibly opening rear windows and a different tilt mechanism for the front seats to aid access. SE I think might be a very limited edition and have no idea what it included. If you have a look at Parkers website you can get a full rundown of the specs. HTH Dave
  2. I think they're standard on the S and Sport.
  3. Used to have about 8 litres left in our tank when the light came on. That's about 60 - 70 miles in a 1.0 assuming that you can use all 34 litres that it holds
  4. If anyone's interested I have a storage tray to fit the lower part of the double DIN dash area. Going free to anyone who wants to collect. I'm in Bedford and it'll be available until the end of next week as I'm moving north.
  5. Well as of 2pm today the Lupo has gone. We're moving to Scotland and I'm going to be working at home most of the time so there really wasn't the need for two cars. Anyway I'm pretty happy as I got £3k for her - 2001 "51" 1.0E in Flash Red, 39K. Standard except for ABS, CD and a rear aero wiper. Cheers Dave
  6. ABS was only mandated from last year. Prior to that it was an option on all but the Petrol Sport and GTi. It's easy to spot as the ABS pump is visible on the passenger side of the engine bay. It has 5 or 6 steel brake lines coming out of it. We ordered it with our 1.0E but to be honest the brakes are so weak it's hard to activate it except by braking extremely violently on very slippy roads. In reality I've never had to brake that hard.
  7. It's on the sticker under the boot floor or in the manual. HTH
  8. Just spoke to Wayside in MK. They quoted £210+VAT to change the belt and tensioner which isn't too bad. The water pump doesn't need changing unless it's leaking as it has a metal impeller anyway. They couldn't answer whether or not it was an interference engine.
  9. Does anyone know if the 1.0 is an interference engine or not? Ours is coming up to 38K in 4 years but there's no specific interval for changing the cambelt. The dealer says that they only have to inspect annually after 5 years. I'd rather it didn't let go and cause a large amount of damage but at the same time I don't want to throw money away changing it too early hence the question. If it's not an interference engine I don't have much to worry about if the belt breaks. Has anyone had the belt changed on a 1.0? How much was it and are there any other things worth doing at the same time? TIA Dave
  10. Had the same thing a couple of months back. It turned out to be a duff plug lead
  11. Coin holders I believe. Although they look pretty useless.
  12. Just had the 40k done on our 1.0. £315 from Vindis in Bedford. The only extra over the service was a brake fluid change that was probably an hour of labour and a few quid for fluid. I asked about the cambelt and they told me there was no set interval for that engine. They did advise that it should be inspected at 5 years (next year) and probably replaced for piece of mind.
  13. Ours was bought on 15/11/01 and was made in Brussels. I suspect they had a few production locations rather than switch production near the end of life.
  14. Could be for a first aid kit. Fairly sure that was an option.

    Chains

If you can't get chains to clear the arches then why not try Autosock I believe you'd need size 54 for 185/55R14 tyres HTH Dave
  16. Just checked my receipts. Ours was £205 including a brake fluid change. That was a couple of years ago.
  17. There's a place in Royston that's supposed to be good. Conqueror Industries Ltd, Royston Trading est, Unit `3-8` South Close Royston Herts SG8 5UH Tel 01763 249535. Think they charge about £50 per wheel for bike wheels
  18. QUOTE(Tigz)I bought the 1.0 for insurance reasons.Ive regretted not buying a 1.4 every since. Although the 1.4 sport is only a insurance group 6, the lower 1.4s doesn't seem that much slower. The 1.0 is just usless. I wouldn't be that harsh about the 1.0. We've had ours for 3.5 years and it's been fine for our purposes. It just lacks overtaking power but it's pretty economical. 1.4 scores over it in two areas - noise. I've driven a few 1.4s and they're turning over about 1k rpm less at 70mph - acceleration. at least 50% more power They will be more expensive to insure and depending on usage, they will be less economical although I believe the combined MPG figure is only slightly lower than the 1.0's We just wanted a cheap new car for commuting and it fitted the bill perfectly. High residuals were important too.
  19. QUOTE(snoopstah)QUOTE(robinA8OLO)4motion is like 204bhp right?4motion is just VW's trademark for their 4 wheel drive systems. While it's usually mated to the more powerful engines, there's nothing that says it has to be. Only in the UK. In Germany you could get 4motion with most of the Golf engines. The 150PD is supposedly much better with 4M as it gives the car a chance to get the power down :-)
  20. Not really a fan of French cars although we did own a 406 for a while which was quite nice and better handling than the Bora that replaced it. It's interesting that everyone comments on the lightweight build yet Renaults are among the best performing cars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. I'd still rather be in a German car though.
  21. Indeed it was a bad ignition lead. Unfortunately they only replaced the faulty one instead of the whole set.
  22. aberdeen_dj Rev counter is to the left of the speedo. I think what's missing is a temp guage - probably just a warning light. Agree that the seats look rubbish but the rest looks OK other than it lacking the Lupo character. Dave
  23. Check engine light flashed for a couple of minutes on the way to work this morning but went off. Didn't notice any difference in performance. Unfortunately it came back on on the way home and stayed on. Car was running really badly and I thought it was going to stall all the time style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> . Anyway, made it to the dealer and left it with them tonight. Hopefully it's something simple and it'll be covered under my extended VW warranty. Dave

    GTi front wipers

Thanks. Don't know why I didn't find that thread on my search.
  25. Hi Folks Can someone tell me if GTi Aero wipers are a straight fit onto a standard Lupo? If so, does anyone have a list of part numbers? TIA Dave
