tdwindustries
Well, this is something maybe someone can test this weekend at the RR day but....I heard from Ross last week that taking the BMC off and removing the decat has been the best performance enhancement ever. Now, to be fair he did both together so it may be the decat and not the BMC decreasing the performance......Something to chew on this morning. zippy
The place I got my remap done at said they'd fitted a de-cat to a Lupo GTI & RR'd it before & after - said it was DOWN 8 bhp.I posted that ages ago & everyone said I was talking rubbish. Nicki
I'd be surprised if the BMC is hindering performance - all it does is supply more air.Perhaps the placement of the BMC could effect it - feeding the engine with lots of warm air rather than a small amount of cold air isn't going to help much.I'm guessing Ross probably positioned his BMC in a sensible place though. gargoil
Don't remember there being any noticeable power increase with these two mods, I think you do perceive it being quicker because of the louder noises the car makes when you boot it!! Nicki
A BMC isn't going to enhance performance by much, but I'd be surprised if it hinders performance.
tdwindustries
well I would say its all the de-cat tbh, but worth measuring once and for all what the BMC does this weekend
Nicki
Only really comparable if the same car is RR'd with & without the BMC though.

Nicki
Ah ok. Who's likely to want to pay for 2 runs though to compare it with & without?

Snoopy
I always told him the de-cat would make it run slower. That second lambda sensor isn't just there for shits and giggles...
dazraz_uk
****** wish i knew this before i went and bought it off Ross!! style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
payna
would be good if someone could do that at the r and r day.... maybe have a whip round to pay for a second run??? Edited November 2, 2005 by payna
Snoopy
Bear in mind the performance decrease (and engine check light coming on) probably won't occur immediately, but over the course of a couple of hundred miles.

nfbr
well the de-cat OBVIOUSLY reduces power, as the standard exhaust system is tuned to have specific back pressure. well the de-cat OBVIOUSLY reduces power, as the standard exhaust system is tuned to have specific back pressure. Tigz™
That wouldnt cause loss in Power.Loss of low eng touque perhaps, but not power.Surely adding a second lamber sender to the de-cat pipe would cure it.There not expencive, and not difficult to fit. Nicki
Apologies in advance for a possibly stupid girly question...How can something have an effect on torque without affecting power? Obviously, there is a relationship between the two but I've never fully understood how you can change one without changing the other.(This all stems from me not knowing/understanding how a schrick manifold works by the way, so its not *that* much of a stupid girly question really...) Tigz™
Touque and Power are completly diffrent things. If you think of it this way.If you were wanted to move an object.Power would be the effort involved in moving it.And Touque would be the work completed. It is of course possable to make lots of effort, but not move the object. Its the same with an engine, you could make loads of power (effort), but not create much touque (work) Edited November 2, 2005 by Tigz
Nicki
Sorry, didn't really explain myself clearly there. I was talking to John (Team Guru) about it & he was talking about the relationship between torque and power as far as making a car move.So how does a schrick work? tdwindustries
cam? by adjusting the profile of a cam it moves the valves less or more (or longer or shorter stroke) Edited November 2, 2005 by tdwindustries
Tigz™
Tim your thinking of the crank. The Cam controls the inlet and exhaust valves.I think a shrick maniofld uses valves to allow more flow at higher revs. This allows free flow (and more power) at higher revs, but meens you wont lose low down touque. As far as I understand it? Nicki
I thought a schrick would give more torque lower down the rev range?
tdwindustries
sorry meant valves.... but actually nicki i was supposed to say i tend to agree. thunking back to my physics days power = torque x rotations per minSo you cant have one without the other. Nicki
Admittedly John & I were a bit p*ssed at the time, but I seem to remember him saying something about a relationship between the two & the reason why diesel engines have so much more torque...Anyways, how does a schrick work?By the way: (Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower Edited November 2, 2005 by nickilupo
