swampy
Hi, new to the Forum. Had our Lupo (53 plate 1.4s sadly automatic) several years now & due to changing circumstances we need to use it to tow trailers of garden rubbish to the tip. Firstly Whilst neither Towsure or Witter list the Lupo anymore I`m aware that historically most lists excluded the automatic, is this just down to insufficient gearbox oil cooling? Secondly you tend to get what you pay for, anyone found a fleabay towbar that is decent? anyone fitted a Brink one (euro parts claim to stock this for £117)? Finally, has anyone actually had an auto with a towbar & if so did Terrible Things befall you?
Rich
No eBay tow bars? I'd assume the scary thing would be the gearbox but just don't meg overload it with three passengers and you should be good.
mk2
Yeah. What @Rich said. Full car =400kg loading. And while you're at it, may as well do both fluids, magnets and filter inside the gearbox...
swampy
will be just me in it with a trailer of garden rubbish. whole lot maybe 300kg tops, tip is only 7 miles away. Didnt know this gearbox needs filters doing (although we have had it several years it only has 84K on the clock, doing typically 2-3K per year). If thats the case we will get that done as a precaution. I`m guessing the box would be something off an auto Golf, why waste money designing a weaker one? Concern there is cooling, may be the Golf had an external cooler & this may not as its lighter loaded. Edited November 21 by swampy
mk2
The mk3/4 golf auto box (096 or 01M) were French design things. Worst thing ever for Vdub. I don't know one that ever lasted beyond 130k miles. Even with lots of love. How do I know...? Lupo was different (real vdub), but they all need fluids and filters changing every 40k I'd say.
swampy
Haven't sussed out how to respond to individual comments yet, but thanks Mk2. Will get it serviced as a priority, Its not in the owners service schedule book, not annotated on any of the stamps and definitely not done in the 8 years we have had her
