thb02
Hi im new here , used to be a regular on club gti and have started to be more so but as I now have a lupo and have been using club lupo for info, its only fair that I share my dabblings here too. So i'll start: Random collection of photos: Car after I picked it up how its sitting now the wheels are ibiza oz's and the same size as the bathursts they replace but lighter. Also a steal on ebay for £104 lol. Car is now also polybushed all round and sitting on AP coilovers. My goal with the car is to make it light but as its my daily but useable too. This will start moonlighting as track **** next year. I've started stripping the interior, all thats left is front seats, front door cards and dash. Made some ally checkerplate matts. picked these up too, not sure how long my back will take them going to work but guess thats the fun?! just waiting for some cds tube to come then i'll get them mounted and weld a harness bar in. Looking to go down the same route engine wise as I did with my mk3 and 1.8t it. thanks for looking
thb02
pretty productive this weekend: quick shot of the rear stripped out still shocks me every time how small it is in the back, and to think there used to be a rear bench in there lol mission was to get at least one of my buckets in and use-able. as a little background, other than a load of practicing in my shed, welding is new to me. But as with all things, i find doing a load of buffing up and then diving in is the best approach sooo... ordered up some cds to make the seat rails made some card templates (please note the tube in the template photos is conduit and not the 3mm thick cds i used for the actual seat rails). transfered onto sheet hole saw to get the circle cuts all cut out and bent with a hammer and vice test fit cut 8 of these to gusset more of the rail to car tab mountings migged on and rails sitting in position all in my welds arn't pretty but im very confident they have penetrated deep which is what its all about. final all turned out much better than expected. still have second seat and also harness bar to weld in but i ran outta gas. Also, i know i left the old rails and seat mounting metal in, its because I was too scared to take it out until i knew I could get the bucket in! It will all be coming out in the great grinding even sometime in the next few months. some other shineys I have to fit: and to tidy my cabling up ta till next time
thb02
Not too much of an update but this turned up yesterday evening lol along with clocks, ecu, key, pedals etc. hopefully i can get this all running on stock management promptly had the box off so I could squirrel the lot away into my man palace in the garden unlike the last swap I did into my mk3 which I was lucky enough to get an engine with only 30k on the clocks, this one has 170k on so its a full strip down is on the cards with new rods while im at it for future proofing. thb02
started to strip the engine down i've gone pretty far with a 1.8t before, but never this far so decided to bag and label all bolts. Will prob change all bolts but its handy to work out what goes where. pcv system in the bin inlet manifold, oil filter assay and aux lot all off clutch off turbo off rocker cover trusty head bolt tool sheared so had to order another. mmmmmm 180k's worth of yum :thumbd: bores look ok though from what i can gather, im no expert. block and head are filthy and some just rained after a wash shots to finish  Edited July 22, 2015 by thb02
Bones
Looks interesting, will enjoy following this thread to see how easy the engine goes in. Good work so far
thb02
Ta. I'm not looking forward to shoe horning it in really.I think the driveshaft shortening will bite me further down the road too but I guess that's the fun of it.
My_Names_Buck
Looking good mate, if there was one thing that i would have done different with mine it would be to have started with a gti. I just think they look so much better! You going for stock power or got any engine mods planned? What's the engine code you've gone with? What's the engine code you've gone with?I have an aum this time round, its not really the one i was after but I basically got engine, gearbox, loom, clocks, pedals, key, and loads of other bits for £250 so couldnt turn it down. Its got a ko3s which will do me for a while. Im off to vegas at the end of the month so depending how it goes I will pick up some rods.I'd go mad with it but there is a baby on the cards Welcome! looks a good build so far, are you by any chance a spark?how did you guess?!Slow progress but a few shots of my tinkering at the weekend. Needed to remove the flywheel and crank pully from the engine so I had to make up a tool to lock the flywheel. I had the waterpump from the engine that I was going to replace anyway, so I hit the shaft out of the waterpump pully and then drilled a 10mm offset hole. bolted it up through a gearbox mounting hole bingo flywheel and pully off as i haven't got an engine stand yet, im doing it on the floor. turned the engine over on some polystyrene blocks sump off not too bad pump off and heres where she sits while i wait for the plastiguage to show up. What's the engine code you've gone with?GTi's are still worth a decent whack though and a tidy one can pull in over the odds from a VW enthusiast. You'll immediately wipe the value of the car fitting a 1.8T. Whereas start with something like a 1.4S with a blown engine (or even just high mileage), electric windows and central locking etc and you'll increase the car value significantly by fitting a 1.8T?Not knocking the OP by saying that, because its his car and I'm rather looking forward to seeing where this one goes, but personally, while GTI's are still pulling in top money, I'd rather start as a 1.4S as a base than a GTI. Just my opinion though.
Cooper_GTI
Looking good mate. With regards to the shafts, make sure you get the length right - I found out the hard way that if you don't, it will be graunchy and chew CV's.What direction are you going with the mounts? Mk4 drivers side and stock drivers, with a modified dog-bone?As an owner of 2 x turbo Lupo's (a BAM GTI and an AGU K03s 1.0L) if you have any questions or need any pictures give me a shout - always happy to help. thb02
got other seat bars welded in and other seat fitted. only harness bar to do, then I can tidy up the interior and focus all time on the engine. bit slow going because of house decorating at the mo. also took car up to infinity exhausts for a full 2.5" system ready for the 20vt. the sound with the 1.6 reminds me of being 17 again, its a bit much lol oped for a single slash cut in the existing cut out. no need to have anything flashy here [:$]

mickster
He said it owed him about £2k, was nothing wrong with it hence I was hoping it wouldn't end up being broken!
thb02
It may well be then. They guy had 3 gtis when I went for it. Apart from it having a non gti boot, it's pretty tidy. Because of the boot I'm guessing that's where the damage was. I was going to get a gti boot but since I've stripped it, the lack of weight in the rear has made for some pretty hairy moments. Need to move more weight back there really.
thb02
Bit of an update, been a while since the last one but turns out engines are expensive things to fiddle with! got rest of my engine stripped down. crank out pistons out next up was honing time id been putting this off for quite a while as even though i must of watched a million you tube videos of it being done, i still felt i was going to kill my block! id found different information on every site i read as to what fluid i should use with the hone. some said atf, others wd40. In the end i went with wd40 as i found the straw\spray combo was great for getting it where needed. before sorry i dont have any vids/pics of me doing the actual honing, its hard to hone and hold phone at the same time. after came out better than i hoped! lovely fresh cylinders! after this, i gave it a good clean with soapy water to remove the filings from honing. next up was to clean and degrease the outside, which got me this: then its time for a lick of paint! masked up everything fin really happy with how it came out. while i remember, i wanted to document this part as it took me forever to confirm it existed and even longer for it to come after ordering. its a mk4 1.8t drivers side engine mount chassis leg plate. means i can weld it onto my lupo chassis leg and the 1.8t will bolt in on standard mounts. till next time
