  1. it could be a battery and or earth issue. (the second or two of dead switch and then it losing the memory). You need a multimeter to help out there. Start the engine, so hopefully your alternator works at idle and your battery is getting some volts to help out, then do window reset procedure again as given above. Do they now work up and down properly? Do they then stop working again after the switch goes dead for a second or two like you mention previous? You need repeatable results to narrow down where the problem is. You can eliminate the switch as a likely problem like this: (On my car) Tan connector = Drivers window Black connector = Passenger window Black dot, pin 1 = common Red dot = down Green dot = up I used very thin solder wire, but any thin wire will do, but dont shove anything fat in there or you'll make the connectors baggy and cause more problems. One end in pin 1 (black dot) touch the other end in for up or down. I had to work this out on mine as i didnt have a switch with the car and i was replacing broken window. It probably isnt the switch tbh, but you can eliminate it without forking out £40 to find out. It sounds like the ecu is losing the memory (assuming the ecu handles that) so I'd look at battery / earth / connectors etc.
  2. Nice, i wonder how you define a bad example? Mine would definitely qualify, but then it was spares repairs and £250 LOL I'll be going for the rally look most likely as it's part way there already. My plate is very close to yours btw, it might get washed twice a year if it's lucky...
  3. Have you done the reset procedure of holding the button? http://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?/topic/71573-how-to-reset-one-touch-roll-updown-windows/
  4. The only real way to overfill it is while it's off the car before refitting it. I wouldnt go mad with the oil though, maybe 500ml over max. The oil in my shagged 085 box was very runny, I'd bet skezza is right about the failures if there was a change to thinner oil and failures increased, i'd go for the slightly thicker stuff in those boxes. http://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?/topic/101627-tdi-clutch/
  5. Does the passenger side work properly from it's own switch in the passenger door after reset procedure?
  6. If you can't read it in situ (and i'm pretty sure the numbers will be upside down compared to the pic above) you might be better off to take a photo in macro made of the number at a good resolution then you can rotate it and make it easier to read. On the lupo box it was easily readable (out of the car) but the polo box was nigh on impossible until i photo'd it. It says 48DCE09117
  7. If the difference in the pictures is confusing then one or both might be using a stock photo and they are both the same items. If both point to GF80-045 especially on APs own site then thats the right one me thinks.
  8. if it says so on the box or tube then yes, Hylomar blue is good for water, if you mean this stuff: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Product.do?method=view&n=1888&p=140042&d=124&c=4&l=2&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Base&utm_campaign=Workshop%20Consumables&gclid=CKHg7P_kt8cCFSYUwwodD7gKrw I used that on the caddy sump and it didnt work, then bought the loctite 5910 which did.
  9. So now you're saying suck it and see? LOL I'll keep a low amps 12v source on it then just in case.
  10. Does it crawl to a stop like it's struggling or just stop clean at a certain point? I assume they will go no further despite pressing switch? And you've done this: http://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?/topic/71573-how-to-reset-one-touch-roll-updown-windows/
  11. Would or wouldn't? not sure that's a typo...
  12. On the 085 box it's on the top flange by the inspection plug hole, you'll probably need to clean it up to read the numbers punched out in dots... If it' hard to read shine a torch at a very shallow angle over the dots. http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/polo-mk3/power_transmission/5-speed_manual_gearbox_085/technical_data/gearbox_identification/ I have a knackered lupo box (pics above) and also a polo box to replace it with. There is a fundamental difference between the boxes i have and that is the gear selector mechanism is different and the polo box is missing the two lugs for mounting the cable selector mech on the lupo. Not sure if this is for all polo boxes but certainly for mine. I'm not too bothered as mine was £30 and i'm planing on swapping the clutch casing over from the lupo box to hopefully make a good usable lupo box for not much money. You may want to double check what box you have in mind to replace into a lupo for this reason.
  13. Just got some Dirko HT today, havent used it yet though, bought for gearbox.
  14. What did you do with the pliers exactly? Cant you undo whatever you did? It may have broken, probably something did break because you suddenly had max travel, but only by looking at it will you be able to work out what.
  15. Got a 1.0 with VW radio and CD changer in the boot, will i need a code if i disconnect battery? It all works fine at the moment and dont want to kill it if i dont really need to. Hint: i dont have a code written down anywhere or that came with the car. I have disconnected the battery and left the battery charger on it on trickle to keep code so far, but now i need the charger for my TDI LOL.
  16. Probably on the bottom of the diff. On the 085 box it is 17mm if i remember right, not sure on your 02J box though. It was stupid tight as was the fill plug on my shagged box. Do a slow change while cold, if it has miles on it then I'd expect that sort of thing. Any noise like whining then check oil level and quality, change if doubtful, if that doesnt change it then drive it steady and line up a new box for it.
  17. Last sump gasket i did was on a caddy and used Loctite 5910 for that.
  18. The 085 gearbox has a drive flange diameter of 90mm according to spec sheets. the TDI doesnt use the 085 gearbox afaik, so that leaves the 108mm option. I have a TDI with 02T box and the flanges are noticeably bigger than the ones on an 085 gearbox. So i'm guessing he's asking what gearbox you have, an 085 or the 02T in a roundabout way.
  19. Question: do you fill these up until it comes out the filler plug hole, or just put a specific quantity in? i.e is that an oil level hole or just a filler hole? Plenty of shiny (metal flakes) oil came out of that dead box btw... I didnt measure it but it easily filled the paint roller tray i drained it into. having just now refilled that paint tray with water to a similar level i can say it was at least 2.5l of oil that came out, not a dry box by any stretch of the imagination, but likely under the 3.1L spec. The oil throw from the diff should oil that bearing and oil level wont affect that too much as the diff sits lower in the oil I'd have thought. So it's probably just not a man enough bearing as it's under double stresses from the diff and the input shaft. if 3.1L doesnt get to the bottom of the filler hole, I'd be inclined to overfill it a touch.
