Rizzo80
Afternoon all  Ive got a 2003 VW Lupo and it runs like a bag of spanners. Previous owner has done sparks leads etc the check engine light is on when driving and then as soon as you come to a stop ie a set of light EPC light comes on and it just wants to cut out. Any ideas? Need this to be a daily runner for the winter and on the way to work there are a lot of sets of lights. When going a constant 30mph or 40 its fine just when you come to a stop  Thanks
Rich
I'd go down the route of a green temp sensor.
mk2
Could be a gummed up throttle body. The breather fume deposits can build up and then the throttle gets a bit sticky. Yeah, do as @Rich says first and check the temp sensor. Might be worth buying a cheap diagnostic interface thing for phone or old laptop. Rizzo80
The guy who i bought it off said it may be a MAP sensor problem .. think ill get some carb cleaner tomorrow and give it a clean out. Will that work on the throttle body too? Â Thanks
mk2
A bluetooth diagnostic phone interface thing will save you hours of trying out different things. Ebay... Unlikely to be the MAP sensor as they're fairly reliable.

Rich
Dip clutch, light revs. In the olden days you would extend the cable a bit.

mk2
The ecu disregards the lambda signal until everything is running stable. So for hot or cold engine start, the engine controls the fuelling based on a look up table. Otherwise known as open loop. Closed loop operation, where it uses the lambda (or O2 probe) takes over once the ecu 'sees' a decent O2 signal. Only then will it trim the fuelling. So if the probe isn't working, it wont affect the running that much, but might make the car use a bit more or less fuel than normal. the first few seconds or around a minute are actually a very good way to find what problems there are with an engine. If something is worn or leaky, the idle can be rough until closed loop takes over. The ecu runs in open loop, and assumes all the components are vaguely in spec. If something is a bit out, it can't tell until it sees the exhaust mixture. Unplug it for the time being. You'll see it'll make no difference. mk2
Mole grips? try disconnecting your crank sensor when it's running. Engine shoukd die straight away and not be possible to restart it. Â I reckon crank sensor ANDÂ maybe cam sensor. There's more than 2 faults...
