Pretty much. Plus as above your clutch release bearing sounds likes it on its way out too.

It will first be in the higher gears then it will whine in the lower gears. Then you will find it jumps out of gear and is hard to go into gear. Your gearbox will then break badly. Honestly the 1.4 16v sport isn't worth the time or effort IMO.

outta interest, is there a better replacement?

what are the gti gearboxes like? or maybe a polo gti box?

Apparently its a weakness in the gearbox and driving in 5th or high revs makes it worse. The Box from the non sport 1.4 has much longer gearing and I don't think it has so many problems. Also you don't have to sit at 4krpm to do 70mph. You do lose the super short 1-4 gears though which isn't bad after awhile.

You can get them rebuilt

Up to you if you do it now or,wait til it goes, but the latter will be more expensive as other internal parts may get damaged in the process and you will be left stranded somewhere. The middle of the m62 in my case!

your problem sounds like this

http://www.getriebefachmann.de/instandsetzung.htm

the rivets get clearance and than they fly of the hole, to a gearwheel and than it it to late. i have a new where the rivets were replaced with screws

than it looks so

http://www.schraubmax.de/fahrzeugbau/Schraubsatz_VAG_Getriebe.html

i had this problem..... first it is very qient and than goes the nois louder and louder and than the gear fu*#d up....

go to a gear specialist, perhaps it is not too late
