Sianyb
Hi all,I new here but thought this is the best place to get a awnser. My 1.4 16v 2000 ish VW lupo, is a poorly girl. . The first of these problems was someone had taken out the window mechanism and replaced it with wood. Got it fixed, worked for a week. Now stuck. Second problem was the whole exhaust dropping off while driving. Embarrassing and inconvenient, luckly near my birthday, so i got a new one as a pressent. My mechanic told me getting that replaced would make sure it passes its mot next month. Well... I took her in again to get looked at, the check engine light had come on and was worriedYeaterday i was told there was no hope for the poor girl. All the sensors are worn and the best thing to do is "run it to the ground." This being my first car and only buying her for a grand, I though I might aswell. But deep down, I really like this car. The engine is spot on and everything is so sound. So, here is my proposal, and i need you opinion. Should I save up and get her fixed? I was quoted £800/£1000Or Should I cut my losses, "run her to the ground" and get another car? I bloody love lupos and possibly would get another one. With the widow and a few dents in her, i cant see myself getting anything at all for her, but to buy another one (same size same year) it gunna cost me a fair bit. Possibly more that its gunna cost me to repair her. Its estimated she will run for another year or so, but i need an opinion now as I should get some saving started regardless. Or can anyone give me any advice on what to do? Im a lady lupo drive and honesty have no clue about cars (apart from I know what a cam belt is and I check my oil once a week )Thanks you reading and i really want to hear your opinions. Oh and sorry about my bad spelling Edited August 20, 2012 by Sianyb
James827
i would get the mechanic to Also look at extra things to see what else could Potentially go or you should keep your eye on, if everything all good apart from a few things then get it done.Just out of curiosity what needs replacing? Surely hes told you.

ThatBrewisKid
get a new engine? or for less than 800 quid you could find a rear ended one take the parts you need then break the rest
georgen
What sensor, list up what needs replacing in your mechanics opinion, £800-£1000 seems expensive for sensors.

James827
800/1000 for a few sensors is suspiciously expensive.
dubsy
you can't tell if a Sensors is worn they just fail i think as a lady driver he's feeding you a load of bs take it somewhere else and have a second inspection £800/1000 he'll be rubbing his hand together hoping you come back imo
Silver!
I was in a rush a few years back and paid a garage to replace a lambda sensor. Charged me £200. I could have bought a sensor for less than £50 and swapped it on my drive.Get a second opinion from a trusted source. Where are you located? You m ay get some recomendation on here. And to your question: Fix what needs fixing and keep it running. Seeing you have body damge, you could just lower it and let it go natural. Maybe give it a bit of patina, but put on some sparkling wheels. Low, narrow and tuck!
Sianyb
They guy who gave me the quote is a friend of my dad and treets me pretty good, he isnt sure himself what sensor it is. Ive had another word with him and he said he could sort something out for me. Im glad no one has said sell it. I took her out for a spin and realise how much i enjoy driving her

Stockle
if it is broke id use it anyway because you will sell it in bits for more than you purchased it for or people looking for projects vw have a devout following which mean it will always sell and even if you lose £300 its a years worth of driving for 300 quid brand new cars lose half their value in 3 years
Batesy
Run it into the ground whilst saving up, then when it eventually gives up, break it and get the extra money and go out and buy yourself a bang tidy AROSA
