number plate recess

Not that I have done it but I think plastic welding will be best option. Filler may sink or crack in time. Also if it's the rear you are thinking of smoothing, you need to relocate the numberplate lights. This is a legal requirement I think.

I may be wrong!!

Best way is to get another bumper and cut the section out from either side of the recess then plastic weld them in place of the recess... thats the best way but I've seen lots of other ways including expandi foam, fibreglass, filler etc... best bet if your not sure is to get it done at a good body shop who knows what they are doing ;)

A number of people bond/weld a blank number plate to the bumper and then plastic fill bigger gaps, before the usual body fill and smooth to get the finish for paint...............this is the process I would use if I were to do it to the GTI.
