i dont have the funds to take it to a garage, ( and from previous experiense of being ripped off) can any of you knowledged people help and point me in the right direction

engine pulese/ surges as if its just about to stall, then over reves all in a matter of seconds, at the lights it sounds likea boy racer is behind the wheel.

This happened to me a few months ago on my 1.4. After a hour of tests it turned out to be the throttle position sensor which is built into the throttle body. Tried cleaning it out and it worked fine for a week but then started its nonsense again. Bought another one from VW and fitted it and has been spot on ever since.

Hope this helps.

Mine kept cutting out as I dipped the clutch before roundabouts etc (not a pleasant experience) - it was because my throttle body was totally gunked up - since that was emptied out, its been fine. The specialists who did it for me say that its a common issue and that a clogged up throttle body can also result in weird rev variations and sticking on high revs.

Hope this helps a bit.

I don't know if they will re set like the 6N Polo but try this:

When engine is stone cold-

Disconnect Battery

Remove throttle body

Clean Throttle body with carb/throttle body cleaner

Re-fit throttle body

If that took you longer than 30mins to an hour then leave the car with the battery disconnected until that time is up.

When 30 mins to an hour is up reconnect the battery

Turn ignition on but do not start the engine, IF the Lupos re set like the 6N you will hear some whirring and clicking coming from the throttle body. This will be the throttle body re setting it's standard values.

Then you can turn the ignition off and then start the engine.

If the re set worked then it should run fine from now on.

If the Lupo is too new to re set it's self like the 6N then you will need to find someone with vag com and get them to plug into your car (port is under the ash tray) and log into the engine section of vag com and perform a basic settings re set (code 060 on vag com) this will run the basic settings program and set your throttle body to run with no problems if it was just due to dirt.

Throttle body potentiometers do break and if they do then I believe you have to buy a whole throttle body as the potentiometer is not sold separately.

On the other hand it may be that you need a new water temperature sender. They send two signals, one to the dash display and the other to the ecu to control the engine. it is common for them to fail on the ecu information side on vag cars so the engine switches between running on choke and not so gives a wavering idle as it does not know what to do.

Either of these could be the cause but the only way to tell is to try them out or plug vag com in.

Hope that helps fella!
