al3x kay
Good Morning everyone,At the weekend I went to top up my oil, I noticed that there was a white/creamy substance on the inside of the oil cap, so I also look in the coolant and it had dropped, but only a little bit. So I am guessin that this means the Head Gasket is on its way out.The question I have is, how easy is this to do myself? I am reasonably good with a spanner. Where should I get the parts from? I need to get it done quickly as I don't have access to another car at the moment. Also, is there anything else that this could be? Am I jumping the gun?Any help would be much appreciated!p.s. Its a GTi (I'm not sure if that makes a difference).
Mike_M
If the head gasket has gone it will require a cambelt change procedure for access due to the cam cover actually being a cam carrier.Do you do a lot of short journeys?
Defcon5
Its probably just the weather- leave it for a bit and keep an eye on the coolant. If you get mayo on the dipstick, then start to worry

Is there anything else that I should look out for? Thanks for the quick responses!
Defcon5
8 miles is nothing, the water may be up to temp but you need long journeys to aviod it the mayo. Its fine - just keep an eye on the coolant for piece of mind
