VW door catches have small micro switchs built into them which replace the usual large clunky ones you get in older cars. They tell you if the door is open or not.

If you get a faulty one, it is a case of replacing the whole lock mech as the micro switch is very difficult to replace due to it being a sealed unit

tell me about it mike, the one in my drivers door has gone, so i get no interior light coming on, and no buzzer if i leave the lights on, i dont think mine has a boot light, its 1999 lupo 1ltr e,,,,,,

thanks mike will get my mechanic to take a look, you do seem to get niggly electrcal faults on lupos for some reason.

No Lupo has a boot light. I retro fitted mine using Mk4 Golf parts.

If you have an original VW alarm fitted, it wont arm your car securely either, due to not knowing if the door is open or not.
