Might be piston rings...what's the current mileage?

Could also be you putting in rubbish oil...Quantum Synta Gold 5W-40 works well.

Could just be compartment in the back box being full of oil.

Your backbox is split into three sections, the first section stores oil that passes through the exhaust, this falls through the holes in the first section. It may well be that this compartment is now full...especially if you're losing as much oil as your stating.

But even under normal consumption this compartment could be full already, juding from pictures I've seen. I always found myself topping up oil every month by about a quarter of the dipstick.

Give it another oil change with the stuff I've recommended and put in some Forte engine cleaner. Procedure is to put in Forte cleaner, leave on tick over for 30 minutes, drain oil (very thin at this point), renew oil filter, renew sump plug and sump plug seal, top up with 3 litres, probably best to do just under and top up to the dipstick level. Then see how much it consumes.

Most probably piston rings i have just had the same problem with mine was putting around half a litre in every week, had the black deposits up the back of the car and milage was only 60k. ended up getting a full engine rebuild as i didn't want to let the car go. Now runs better than it ever has, If you do i'd reccomend the engine shop. Sam

It will probably be valve stem seals and piston rings..... Although changing the rings might not cure the issue for long, If you have bore wear.

I would look for a low milage crashed lupo for the engine.

went to a stealership today for a bit of advice and he dont think its the piston rings but more likely to be the valve seals... dont really wanna buy a new engine coz knowin my luck it will do the same lol as it seems to be a pretty common problem lol, they guy at the stealership said sell it and buy a gti coz u dont get as many probs with those lol but i cant afford one :(

Oh dear. I was only telling a girl on here last week to get a gti not a sport because of problems if only she could of seen this. I had a sport and had every problem under the sun apart from this. God bless the gti. It will save you money and retain it's value in the long run.

yeah its kinda little black sooty spots, its where the oil is gettin into the combustion chamber then comin out of the exhaust. at first i didnt think it was oil coz it wasnt sticky at all but if ya stick a pair of gloves on and feel the deposits inside ya tail pipe its a bit tacky.

Bah...my Sport was on 67k when I sold it and it never drank oil. Just the normal consumption that's expected for this sort of engine as I mentioned in my earlier post.

Frequent oil changes and an engine oil cleaner could help.

From speaking to a local vw specialist there are good and bad engines something to do with the quality of materials they use for the internal seals, rings etc. He seemed to think that some engine codes seemed to be more reliable than others. From speaking to other members on here also it seems that a few of the AFK models were not too good (like mine going at 64k) Whereas my friends has something like 80k and no sign of any problems (different code). But i've run in my engine fully and done a few miles since the rebuild and all seems to be good. In fact best its run in my ownership.... Though saying that mine was getting the black deposits on the back from when i got it though didnt think much of it to start with. So i guess the previous owner must have known. Knowing what the problem was i thought it was best i got it sorted and stick with the car rather than sell it on and pass on the problem.

Hope this helps in some way, Sam.

Yeah mine was AFK.

It's probably down to people changing oil every 10k and not checking oil levels.

I changed my oil every 5k with Synta Gold and checked the levels on a monthly basis and topped up as necessary with spare oil from the 5 litre container.

Although as you say crap parts don't help regardless.

My current 3 cylinder doesn't drink a drip of oil. Water comes out the exhaust.

hmmm i have the aub engine...nticed that oil is getting into the throttlee body throught the little pipe going into the airbox...

That's your oil breather pipe and is perfectly normal. Make sure that pipe is never blocked. Some people put filters at the end of them to stop oil going through the throttle body but you end up smelling fumes in your car as a result.

On the newer Polo's that pipe is attached to the inlet manifold preventing oil from entering the throttle body.

"My current 3 cylinder doesn't drink a drip of oil. Water comes out the exhaust."

Don't those 3 cylinder engine run on water anyhow :P

Nah, for some weird reason though you get a set of bike pedals to push instead of a gas pedal.

Lupo's run on Synta Gold 5w-40.

Polo 1.2 3 pot engines run on Synta LongLife III 5W-30 which costs bucks compared to Gold mate. Although I'm running it on Gold and it's running very well.
