As far as I'm aware, all the GTI's were made in the Wolfsburg factory.

All the chassis numbers should start with WVW if its true.

All GTIs were made in Wolfsburg, but the factory code is further in the chassis number than the first three characters :)

My chassis number for instance is: WVWZZZ6XZ2B******

All our Lupos start with 'W' to denote a German manufacturer. (Off the top of my head, 'S' is for British manufacturers, 'V' for French, 'J' for Japan, 'Z' for Italian, '1' for American)

'VW' is Volkswagen's code (but isn't always this easy to decipher in other manufacturers' codes, because Fiat use 'FA', Vauxhall use 'OL', and Peugeot use 'F3')

'ZZZ' is a filler.

'6X' is the code for a Lupo

'2' shows that it's a 2002 model car.

'B' is the code for the Belgian factory, in Brussels.

This thread contains a post from One Litre Wonder detailing all the factory codes :)
