High level rear brake light the usual!

Recommended Posts

I took the car into the garage today for a service and they noticed the high level rear brake light wasn't working, anyway they tried to access it from the outside thereby cracking the lense.

I ve found out the replacement part number for the new unit but does anybody know if that includes the lense?

Why would they try to access it? It only requires a visual check to see its not working! If they broke it whilst it was in there hands, they can fix it the cheeky gits.

I've never known a garage to physically check something without the owners permission, mind you though I only go to VW themselves or my mates garage.

classic garage test is to run ones finger across it, you can see the difference in shadow if a bulbs gone

sounds iffy to me

Basically like every other GTi the shitty 3rd rear brake light had never worked, it was in for his 40k service. Anyway they thought they would try and be helpful and clean up the contacts on the 3rd rear brake light but didn't realise you had to remove the spoiler to access it, they put a little crack in the lense and told me about it when i collected the car. I was planning on replacing the whole unit anyway so I couldn't care less, I just wanted to check a new lense came as part of the unit.

Its not iffy at all, its a local VW specialist I have used for years, a company that actually believes in customer service unlike the main dealers, they tried to do me a favour its not their fault its a **** design.

Anyway back to the original question does a new lense come as part of the kit?

the local buisness i use believe in customer service too, if they broke anything it would have been replaced by the time i picked the car up

i believe it does contain the outer lense yes

Cool, cheers for the info, when I collected the car they apologised and said they broke the outer lense and took me out and showed me it and asked what I wanted them to do about it, I said not to worry as I would be replacing the whole unit anyway, they knocked a fair chunk off the price of the service anyway -enough to pay for the new unit

Most dealerships would have simply denied all knowledge to be fair. In fact they wouldn't have looked at it in the first place.

You'll continue to get this problem until you seal the spoiler to the car - just like VW did for me when I kept coming back to get it replaced under warranty. Just make sure you have the correct kit, and not the OEM addon lupo spoiler kit.

They are quite good in there, been servicing my families cars for years.

The MOT is coming up shortly, hence my reason for looking into it, I know some places will pass it with it non working and others won't. I was going to seal the spoiler to the car when I remove it with some marine spec stuff, I just want to make sure I could remove it again incase it was to fail in a year or so's time!

I was half tempted to remove the light and get it smoothed and resprayed as its a complete PITA, not sure what that would do for the resale values though.
