How is the headlining fixed?

Recommended Posts

I need to partially remove the headlining of my GTi to have a small dent removed from the roof. (Some moron threw a `supermarket-type` shopping basket off a roof!).

Any ideas how it is fixed in place?

It's not a fun job, and allegedly it never goes back perfectly, but here goes:

1. Remove and disconnect interior light (lever out with screwdriver):

2. Remove main sunvisors - lever off cover '3', remove screw '4', unhook visor on one side, lever off cap '6', remove screw '7':

3. Remove grab handles (fold down, lever open two covers, remove screws):

4. Fold down centre tiny sunvisor and remove screw from roof frame. Remove centre sunvisor. Lower front of headlining, and slide entire headlining back until guide lugs '5' unhook from roof crossmember '6'. Then pull the headlining free of the roof crossmember.

VW recommend you have two people to remove the headlining, as there's the danger of it breaking if not supported when removed.

Hope this helps!
