high pressure air feed

how to do an air intake on a lupo properly....if you dont mind cutting bits of it up!

Firstly cut a hole out of the plastic slam panel across the top of the rad (make sure you cut below the levels of the grill clip recievers as these mark the lowest bonnet line).

Depending on how big you want the intake pipe to be its up to you how big you cut the hole

(ive gone the full hog and cut out as much as i can and ive even trimmed off a few fins of the rad to get an even bigger hole)

Ive then fed a 63mm pipe from the airbox into this hole (its a tight fit) then to make it look as standard as possible ive got some rubber ducting off a 1.8 deisel escort and pulled it over the actual pipe and et voila, one standard looking intake and a direct air feed!

P.S. anyone got a spare gti airbox that they dont want? i could do with one for the next stage of my intake project!?!?!?!

yeah it may suck some water in but it wont inhale enough water to pose a threat at all. Its worth it though the engine is much more responsive and its improved its low rev power. Ive had my engine like this for a while now and touch wood no probs and it rains a lot round here. but yeah good thing you pointed that out really!

good job. does look quite oem. i'm going to the grill on the other side where there is a hole also.

about the rain or even a bucket of water thrown in there is not a problem, filters can take getting a little wet. small amounts of water that even get past the filter are not a problem either.

Just makes the air denser!

I was loking where ytour taking your dark... i cant go that way, theres 2 air conditioning pipes in the way!

Like the install toi, I think i might have to go that way, im fed up of the standard pipe from the bmc vibrating on anything and everything... its covered in foam and tied down, i think its the noise echoing or something.

inside its standard 63mm air feed pipe from the likes of demon tweaks/halfords or any flexible ducting pipe you can find really. This pipe mates up nicely to the origional airbox. Ive just shaped it and held it all in place with a couple of wraps of electrical tape, seeing as its hidden under the rubbing ducting appearance doesnt matter. I see no reason why you cant use the same set up for a bmc or even a cone filter?!?!?..............hhhhmmm......

As for the rubber stuff get down the scrappy and just grab some off another car just so long as its big enough to go over the main pipe, jobs a good'un. ive used escort 1.8 diesel van ducting and its perfect after a little trimming.

Good stuff! I've been thinking of doing something similar to this, but also wondered about water getting in there. It's not quite as easy in mine either as there are aircon pipes and an intercooler to contend with too.

What about all the extra crap that will get sucked in, are you just going to change the filter more often?

Shouldnt be a problem really, loads of cars, have air intakes right at the front, s2000's peugeot 106's and escorts among others have an intake right at the front, get a decent filter and wash it every few months, 10 mins and job done. ive had my intake up front for a while now and the filters fine.

Tell me, do you still get the car kangarooing or jerking in the mornings with your air intake re-routed?

Nope hardly notice it at all now, the only time it kangaroos now is when i'm not driving it properly lol!

I've done something similar with my Sport.

I kept the original plastic ducting which leads to the front of the car, scrapped the heat pipe and cold air pipe. Bought some K&N ducting, connected it to the plastic pipe and directed it down towards the bottom left side, you can see a gap, a few cable ties and sorted.

Not quite high pressure but it does the job of getting cooler air in.

I will take a picture now and post back in about half an hour.

I suppose it will have to do until I get my pollen filter housing, the bolt-on filter stinks as its not a sealed unit.

Interesting.

Thanks for that, I have a long standing theory that the location of the air intake causes the characteristic kangarooing early in the mornings.
