Well guys and girls i want a bit of help rolleyes.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

So im currently at uni doing a business degree, im in my first year and hating every minute of it, ive been pushing myself to keep on the course but now ive got a huge assignment due in next week which i really have no clue about and have bearly started it, also two exams which again ive no idea about, i mean the global economy huh.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> .

Ive lost interest in the course and really carnt stand to do 2 - 3 more years, Plus i really doubt i will pass this year, i dont think im going to do the assignment or exams im just going to leave, im getting worried about them and id rather leave rather than have a fail. I know i should probably finish the course but its just too hard.

Tbh i never saw myself going to uni and now i wich i didnt go. I really enjoyed business at college and i did quite well in it, but uni is totally totally different and i hate it. Also business is considered a bit of a throw away degree now as so many people are doing it, its usless without experience which i would get for a sandwich course, btu then its another 3 years and i carnt cope with doing that.

So then what do i do now?:

Now im nearly 20 and therefore too old for most apprenticeships. Although there are a few business ones going, which might be ok as i did enjoy it, its just uni is so boring its unreal.

My main interest is in cars, so i thought what about a car sales person, usually when i go into a dealer i know more about the cars than the salespeople do who are supposed to be selling them, so i thought i might be good at that. But there are no apprenticeships round here for that. And its not a fantastic job i know, but its something i would enjoy and id rather work at something i enjoy rather than hating what i do just so i can have more money

However there is one for a service advisor which i might apply for.

Ive also thought about a driving insturctor, something ive wanted to be since i was about 11 laugh.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> but then ive heard that the exams are really hard to pass and also i can imagine it will be very stressful.

Sorry for the essay i just wanted the vent my feelings so its helped, and thanks to anyone who has bothered to read it and gives me some suggestiong on what i should do smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

if its really that hard and you hate it that much dont do it. if you dont feel excited by it then you wont do your best anyway! the car sales sounds good, i was thinking about that before i came to uni, dont become a driving instructer apparently the exams are hard and you get board of it after a while!

really you just have to think hard about what you really want to do, you might be hating the course now but if you get through next year could be awesome. i wanted to leave my couse last year, but i stayed and the second year turned out to be really fun!!!! go with your gut instinct whatever you do, it will work out in the end!

I am just finishing a business degree - I changed onto a sandwich option in second year, so I will now graduate with BA (Hons) Business Studies with Supervised Work Experience. I am mucky enough to have got a full time job with the company I did my two 6 month placements with, and start as projects co-ordinator after my exams.

I have enjoyed my degree, and most of the modules studied, which has helped. If you are not enjoying it now, and therefore not putting the full effort in, then chances are you will struggle two-three years down the line (if you made it that far). My degree was mostly compulsary modules until third year where I could taylor it to suit my interests or what I wanted to do - marketing, law, acounts, etc. Maybe you could do this as well.

Not really got advice or suggestions sorry, but think about it carefully, and don't just drop out because you can't be bothered working at it - you may well regret it. Good luck whatever you decide to do, hope you make the right decision.

Well it is hard and i dont enjoy it one bit, which is why ive left my assignment until the last week as i just dont have the drive to do it. I feel like i would be wasting my time and getting stressed out over nothing just to end up failing anyway.

How would i get into car sales though? ive applied for a service apprenticeship but id ideally like sales. I think im going to send a Cover letter and Cv round some dealers and just see if i get a reply, its always worth a go i guess.

Thanks for the advice smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I used to enjoy it at college, i know it was an easier level but i pushed my self more to get better marks as i really enjoyed it and i did well in it. But now its all changed, the work is quite hard, i wish i was someone who could just sale through exams with little revision like some mates do, but im not, ive really got to put loads of effort into it and im just not enjoying the course so i dont put as much effort in as i should.

Ive chosen to do HRM in my final two years as that was the closest to a course that i would like, but im usually quite reserved so i dont think i would be any good managing people or whatever. But it doesnt sound like something id want to do, im really confused about the whole thing.

Which is why i thought of a car salesman, i can easily talk about cars as in interested in them and know loads about them, not that much about the mechanical side more about the selling side, like specs etc.

I dont really want to be just in a dead end job working for peanuts and bored out of my mind so i need to have a real think.

Part of it is because i carnt be bothered working at it yes, but its only because i think its pointless as its not what i want to do anymore, im tired with education and i want something more practical and hands on, not just sat in lectures for the next 2 years.

I never thought i would go to uni, i just kind of went with the flow, but instead of just folowing my mates and do the same as them and go to the closest uni i was told by most lecturers at college that the one i go to now is better so i went there. So now i am away from my mates, have to drive further and and not enjoying it as much as they are. Actually i quite like the driving part, sometimes its the only thing that dragged me to uni was the fact i could drive there laugh.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Thanks, Chris

I've been feeling very low about Uni at the moment too - I'm nearly at the end of my second year though, so I've decided to stick it out as I do find some bits of it interesting.

If you really aren't enjoying it, and can't see it helping you in the future then maybe it is time to leave. Keep going with the work and see how you do this year, but send round some CVs and cover letters too, see if anything comes back. You might do better than you expect at uni and decide to keep going, or you might hear back from one of the companies with a job offer smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Oh bless you sad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> I know how you feel - I was doing an HND in Media Production specialising in Business Media and Advertising and I absolutely hated it! The first year was great and I passed with flying colours, but the second year was complete rubbish and I lost all interest and failed. I really wish I had taken a year out before doing the course as that would've given me time to think more about what I wanted to do. I had a few jobs since college, working at BT, pet shops and other places, and I'm fortunate enough to have found my perfect job now - in administration of all things! It's such a lovely job, but I think that's mostly because of the people I work with smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I honestly reckon that if you really don't think you're going to enjoy it (because you need to enjoy doing something if you want to do well with it) then perhaps you should complete this year then take some time out to decide if it is what you really want to do? It's been 4 years since I was at college now, and I've decided that I would like to go back (but not yet) to get my art degree and perhaps get in to teaching... if only I had realised this before!!! rolleyes.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

But seriously, do whatever makes you happy laugh.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Good luck!!

Em x

Well i really dont think i will pass this year, i havent done very well so far. And this assessment cwk is really getting to me, ive just left it too late now and im getting stressed about it, its really not worth it.

Ive got to collect info about airlines, destinations costs etc, make 24 tables to put the info in, then input it into a program SPSS (which is really hard to use, or i think it is, and i carnt do it, i went into uni today and there is no one around to ask), ive then got to analyse my findings when ive compared them and then write a report. So ive left it too late, i know its my fault but i really dont see the point in putting in loads and loads of effort now when i dont want to go into business anymore.

Also ive got an accounting exam on thursday, ive not idea about it, ive always hates maths and im no good at it either, Infact ive yet to find something i am good at laugh.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> . And another exam next week. All of this i havent prepared for, its kind of just crept up on me and now im panicing.

Ive been thinking for months about leaveing though and i wish i had left sooner now.

@PinkFonz - I would like to take a year out and just find a little job to keep me going for the next year and plan something for the year after, some kind of career path. But if i want an apprenticeship then i need to act now and fast while im still within some of the age limits on them.

I can always do evening courses or part time uni if i decide what i want to do, but its not business stuides anymore, i wish i had realised earlier.

Teahcing is a good job, my mum is a primary teacher, teaching yr6, the hardest one of them all, getting the kids through sats and having to teach every subject, not like uni lecturers that seem to do nothing at all but stand there and drivel on about things im not interested in mad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

THanks for all the replys btw, its really helping hearing what other people think and experiences you have had.

I started a similar thread a bit ago, well ive dropped out now. Was feeling the same as you, but I decided the uni itself and the course were the things I didnt like, so I rang up a different uni and they gave me an unconditional offer straight away (for a different course).

Lots of poeple drop out of uni, as it is very different to school and obviously some people dont like it. But I can assure you from what you have said, if you leave you wont regret the decision, and you can go back to uni any time you want if you feel you needa degree!

If you enjoy something enough, you will work hard and excell in it. You spend most of your life at work you might as well choose something you enjoy. If you really want to do a particular job, focus on the training required and get yourself your ideal job or you will only be thinking what if for the rest of your life. Its never to late to retrain and your only 20!

Hello sorry to hear your not enjoying it at uni. I never went to uni but did go to college, started off in a crappy job (office junior) but i'm now a legal secretary for a partner of a law firm and am studying to be a paralegal.

The course is hard and I have to give up my weekends to study. I have 6 weeks to do each assignment which sounds a long time but when you work full time trust me its not.

Anyway enough about me in my experience people that go to uni don't end up getting a job in what they studied anyway but maybe you should stick out your first year and if you really do not like it at least you can say you tried and trust me it looks much better on a CV.

Imagine... you go for an interview and they say "How comes you did not stay on at uni?" you say "oh because I did not like it so I gave up" whereas if you stick it out for a year you can gain some knowledge and it looks like you've tried.

If you stay on at uni you won't walk out straight into a good job anyway you'll have to start at the bottom like everyone has to. Maybe you could get a job in what you enjoy and work your way up - that is what I am doing (plus you get paid for it!!) also you won't end up with a large debt!!

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh - don't mean it to be - hope i've helped in some way

Nicola

surely that is punishment?

the hassle of a degree and then ending up working for the NHS?

True. My friend did exactly the same as you, while I was at uni he was working. Eventually did a part time degree (which they paid for) and earned at the same time. Going to finish my training soon and get me a part 3, got to do my 2 year diary which I have put off for two years. eek.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="eek.gif" />

I dont envy her (could not do her job), but the nhs is one of the biggest employers in the world. The nhs is doing something right or they would not have so many employees. You get a cracking pension, she will hopefully support me when I am a coffin dodger.

Not really true, employers would be understanding if you didnt like something, as long as your honest about it. Uni isnt for everyone obviously. The most important thing is if you drop out you apply yourself to something else important (decent job, another course etc) straight away. If you bum around it will look like you just couldnt be arsed!

If you dont like uni now I doubt it is gonna get better, and if you are not applying yourself properly you are just waisting time when you could be building up some other form of experience.

Yep exactly my thoughts smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> and its costing me about £4.5-£5K a year taking into account student loans and charges. So its not worth it really, when im not enjoying uni and dont feel like im getting anything from the experience, im totally bored with it and need something new to do.

Im not someone who will just bum around and do nothing until something finds me, i hate just doing nothing so i will be out there finding my next thing, and ive already started applying for things, hopefully someone will take me on smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ive given it a go and its not for me. Ill see what my programme leader says on friday, and go from there.
