Pinking

Hi Forum,

I have read a number of articles about Arosa's that suffer engine pinking (pre ignition under engine load) when accelerating.

My wifes 2 year old 10,000 mile 1.0S (AUC model) started pinking quite badly at any speed. Even when acceleating from say 70 mph to 80 mph, that surprised me !

I didnt bother with the Seat garages as I dont rate them at all . Instead I took out the plugs which looked very grey/white, lean running and bit fury (I know they have a platinum core).

Anyway I replaced them with an aftermarket set from the very good www.vwspares.co.uk. They only cost £4.53 + VAT. Delivery was £5.95. I got the whole lot for £28.28. They would have been individually cheaper if I had placed a big order (I already had a box full of oil filters from them which were also really cheap and good).

The point being I torqued them up to 20Nm and the car DOESNT PINK ANMORE, it runs sweet as a nut ! As you can imagine I (and the bride are really pleased) !

30,000 miles from a set of plugs I dont think so !

Technical stuff below look away now !

The new plugs by the way were French made Beru Ultra 14F-7HPURX2 0 0001 335 911 platinum gapped at 1.1mm.

Thats interesting, mine used to do that before it had a new engine, i think it might still be doing it, i wonder if they have changed the plugs. Mine has done 26,500 and as far as i know they have never been changed.

what kinda fuel are you using mate? my lupo done this for a bit. i was told to use optimax. filled the car up, took it for a wee blast and it stopped. think its got to do with the octane content or sumthing. optimax is 98. higher than standard unleaded which is only 95. give it a try.

edit: sorry, didnt read the post properly blush.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

Just bog standard Asda 95 octane. You are right though a higher octane would be less prone to pinking.

Am I not right in thinking that 98 octane is what the old 4 star petrol was ??

I recall retarding the ignition on an old 89 model Fiesta to try and get it to run on 95 octane unleaded. Back in those days of strobes and rotating distributors retarding the ignition was the best way to reduce pinking - still did it on hills though ! Super unleaded helped !
