  1. ^Genuinely laughed out loud at that He's right though, they do vibrate a bit... Mine had pretty much dissassembled its own interior by the time I got it and I spent ages tracking down rattles in the panels and lining them with bits of foam etc. Unless it's a really harsh metal on metal type of sound I'd imagine it's pretty much 'business as usual' I'm afraid mate As Skezza pointed out he's made up a handy guide to reduce base idle, that should help and it's certainly something I plan to do once I've got time/someone with VAG-Com access handy.
  2. I'll echo everyone else's sentiments RE reliability, the SDI variants are a wonderfull choice for people who want a no-nonsense working car I've had mine for 5 months and clocked up 6000 miles now, other than an exhaust and window winder failing (The usual stuff you'de expect to replace on a 15 year old car) it's been utterly dependable.
  3. Sorry to hear about this You've probably already thought of this, but I'd start posting on enthusiast groups on social media and asking folks to share... Hopefully that will generate some leads and if nothing else it'll make the car/parts more difficult to move on.
  4. http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/56612-Lupo-Oil-service-message-reset HTH.
  5. G50 is GL4, fully synthetic and is/was 75w90, although it's of a much higher viscosity than many oils of the same grade once up to temperature (Lot's more boring information on this in my members cars thread) I completely agree RE keeping on top of the level and addressing any leaks, having some actual oil in the box (Irrespective of what grade) is always a good policy
  6. DXQ is the gearbox 'code' where-as the gearbox 'type' is '085', common in many VW's of that era. Here's an Ebay listing showing an example of an '085' gearbox coupled with the codes that it's compatable with (Including DXQ)...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/POLO-1-9-1-7-DIESEL-SDI-RECON-GEARBOX-085-DCT-DCH-DED-DPX-DXF-DXQ-DXG-FDQ-EQX-/270822020301 Also, and perhaps more usefully, here's a link to a Seat workshop manual for Arosa gearboxes, showing the 1.0, 1.4 and SDI all using the '085' gearbox, albeit with differing codes...http://workshop-manuals.com/seat/leon-mk1/085_5-speed_manual_gearbox/technical_data/identifying_the_gearbox/ Worth noting that the Seat workshop manual also recommentds 'G50' gear oil for all of the '085' gearboxes (1.0, 1.4 and SDI)
  7. Without meaning to directly contradict Skezza here (He's far more knowledgable than me and has helped me loads with SDI based queries!) , the SDI models use the same '085' series gearbox as the 1.0 and 1.4 models, albeit with different ratios to accomodate the diesel lump and as such should in theory suffer the same issues (5th is at the top of the 'box too). Why are the 1.0 and 1.4 models so infamous for early failure, whilst the SDI's don't seem to get much mention I hear you cry? I'd suggest that they're probably no more prone to it than SDI variants, it's just in terms of numbers they're far more prevelent than the relatively rare NA diesel models, and on that basis we all hear about them much more... Try and find a good SDI 'box from breakers online, it will quickly become apparent that they've pretty much gone/go straight away to be used as replacement units, very telling RE the TDI gearbox, those cars don't use the 085 gearbox, althought anecdotal evidence suggests they do on occasion fail too in the same way that most other post 1995 VW boxes can... I'm a great lover of VAG cars but there's a general consensus that for a long time now they've been resposnible for producing some fairly shonky gearboxes
  8. Thanks, they weren't too hard to make. The material is actually quilted leatherette intednded to be used as jacket/bag lining.
  9. After a lengthy drive this afternoon I can confirm the extended shifter will be staying. The more and more changes I make to the interior the more it feels like getting in and out of a gentleman's club in the seventies.... Perfect. Whilst on the subject of the interior, today brought with it a further changes. The original seats had taken on a washed out colour, exactly as you'd expect given the car spent 13 years baking in the Japanese sun befere being imported here in 2002... Que some early Mk2 UK MX5 seats...Here's a pic of them side by side for comparison of new vs old... As luck would have it, the breaker car that these came from also benefited from a Mk2 windbreaker with cargo-net. These things really work and stop much of the blowyness (Oi oi!) in the cabin whilst the hoods down... All fitted... I'm pleased to report that whilst tidying things up nicely, the later seats also seem to offer much better support whilst simultaneously lowering driving position by an inch or two. It's nice to see that despite loosing lot's of the magic (Pop up lights etc) in later generations, the seats got better, much better
  10. Another small Eunos themed update. This week I've be mostly fannying round with shifters, mostly. The standard MX5/Eunos short shifter is a great bit of kit and helps provide the 'rifle bolt' gesrchanges that these cars are so famous for, it is however fairly boring to look at... As a bit of an experiment I've now installed a 6" JDM 'long throw' shift extender. This ties in nicely with the 60's/70's sportscar theme I'm trying to channel and further ramps up the rero feeling in the cabin... As a side note it's worth mentioning that the shifter itself came from a fairly well known throttle bodie'd car on the MX5 scene having been featured in Banzai magazine etc... Within the MX5 circuit lots of the aftermarket parts we use have their origins in the 90's and have by now passed through many sets of hands! For the most part I know the history behind many of the bits that have come together to make my Eunos what it is, and also the cars that they came from. Another good example of this would be my current wheels, I know of three other forum members that they belonged to before I got them I love the fact that lots of the bits fitted have a history and a story behind them, it seems to make the whole 'modifying' process feel much more wholesome
  11. Love this, it's like that film, 'Indecent proposal' (Albeit in a Lupo based format)... So romantic. She gets a night of unbridled passion with our very own VW yoda Rich, and he in turn gets a free 1.0 Lupo, everyone's a winner, right?
  12. That's a very kind offer Sir, and I'd be happy to be proven wrong In keeping with the spirit of things, I'd happily offer a test drive of my legendary '89 Eunos in exchange. Drop me a text one weekend TBH though, to make a 2001 hatchback with 150k under it's belt worth £2700 it would have to have some kind of built in Jenna Jameson head that came out of the dash and provided constant blowjobs as I drove....I Just don't get it.... Also, worth mentioning I've driven the 1.8T models fairly extensively, wallowy and heavy they may be but they provide very nippy driving with a grown up feel to it. For me, and at my time of life that counts for a lot.
  13. I think what you mean to say is you actually have three kids *cough cough*, therefore winning 'learner driver top trumps' and clearly making you more deserving of the free Lupo
  14. Exactly. This too. Like I say, each to there own, but to me the Lupo GTI pricing seems barmy, and frankly leaves me baffled as to why anyone would bother
  15. The 1.8T GTI did/does 134 mph vs the Lupo GTI's 127mph, so yes, it's faster FWIW I get the rarity thing though, I still struggle to understand why anyone would pay that kind of money for one. Each to his own eh?
  16. ^ Don't tell me, you've got needy children who require a car to lean in as well
  17. Very kind, but Geneva tends to be a bit out of the way of my usual route there TBH. RE coming over in the SDI, I was tempted but in the end decided agaisnt it on the basis that I've only known the car for about 16 weeks, it's old and has 125k on the clocks, and additionally I had my wife and 21 month old son in tow this time and didn't want to subject them to any potential breakdowns/cramped conditions. Had it just been me I would have done TBH, but this time we borrowed a 15 reg Corsa from my younger brother and made the trip in that.
  18. Intreresting, I spend lots of time in France, in fact I've just returned from two weeks in the South West, and I often find myself longing for their good quality (And mostly empty) roads when I get back to blighty Where abouts are you jon-273? Are you working out there?
  19. That aside,at least it'll be good in snow
  20. The 1.7 SDI suffers with wallowy/wooly feeling drive due to to much weight at the front for such a small car (Ask me how I know.) Love the idea of a 1.9TDI conversion in principle, but I'll wager that this handles like a box of frogs.
  21. Did I mention I have two sons too... 17 and 18
  22. I always struggle to get my head round the GTI pricing TBH... When 18. turbo variants of the Mk4 Golf GTI's have been under £2k to buy (And often with sub 100k millages for that price) for some time now, I really don't understand why Lupo's with taxi millage would fetch so much Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be deliberately contrary about it, but the Golf is faster (And superior in just about every other way)... Am I missing something?
  23. Set of original Golf G60 wheels (4x100), not perfect but in very good condition and better than the vast majority out there, minimal corrosion, I've given these a going over with good quality silver wheel paint and they've come up very nicely. All four centre caps are included. The wheels come fitted with four matching and virtually new/unused Barum Bravuris 3 tyres in 195/50R15 all with 6-7mm tread. A simple 'google images' search shows that these look great on most Lupo's, I'd keep them myself but have decided I've now got too many wheels between my various cars and some will have to go! The wheels are located in Durham, I'd like £180 for these. Collection is welcome, although if required I can have these delivered to your door for a £40 fee. Edit to say these are now SOLD.
  24. You've bought wheels that are too large for your car (By a country mile) 195/40/16 might fit... I'm sure someone who knows about these things will be along shortly to offer you some advise
  25. ^Things just got even more cryptic.... I had suspected this thread held the answer... Now it seems I'm in the business of looking for a non specific metal rod situated "roughly" behing the pedal, and I need to de-straighten/re-bend said rod... The good news is I own a 10mm spanner and also a "magnetic stick" You lot crack me up! I'll have a look this afternoon and see what I come up with. Who knows, I might even update this thread with the answer to the problem and include pics of how to rectify the issue later in the week (Have I metnioned I hate dead end threads?) If not (And that seems likely, I've already spent way more time than I'd planned to messing about with the Lupo) I'll consider the accelerator function being limited as a built in 'eco mod'
