It allows som exhaust gases to return to the intake to reduce the amount of oxygen in the mixture, this reduces temperature and reduces emissions at the expense of economy.

Plus the fact it covers everything in soot!

You literally take it off and bolt a plate over the hole and replace it. I'm pretty sure this will put a fault light on though so they may be a 'proper' way or you could just map it out (considering you have a TDI this is a very good idea anyway)

It's fiddly buy the egr blank. Take the engine cover off then at the back where the big pipe in the left goes into is the egr then follow the small pipe that comes off at the back that goes onto the turbo then I'd undo either side and put the blank in preferably the turbo side if you can get to it. Hope it helps
