Coolant Temp Sensor

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My coolant temp sensor has never fully worked, it works from time to time but usually drops to 70 or even 0 as im driving.

Im in 2 minds weather to change it or not, ive had a look in the engine bay at the sensor but it looks like its in a tricky place, I have a ahw engine.

Has anyone changed this sensor for this type of engine?

Do I really need to change it and if I do would I notice any difference? the engine is abit juddery at the moment, would the temp sensor be the cause of this?

Any help would be great

I changed mine a few month ago only cost like a 5a from ebay. sorted the job right out as it can effect the fuel consumption etc so in the long run probs not too good for engine internals because when the engine is cooler it is fed more fuel by the ecu so if your car isnt burning the fuel given it may cause long term problems like seals etc. this is just what i have read in the past but go for it just make sure you use the g12 coolant to top it back up with.

Well I changed it in our Lupo because the guage was going all over the place.

Took the old one old, tried to fit in the new one (whilst coolant) was pissing out, but it wouldn't fit! Eventually it completely emptied out and found the problem was the rubber o-ring was stuck inside.

So if you pull out your coolant temp sensor, make sure the o-ring comes with it, then you can ninja in the new one.

I wasn't too fussed, as it flushed the old stuff out and filled with new coolant, so win win.

Now getting much better fuel economy

I finally changed the sensor yesterday in the rain, I just ended up pulling the black c clip off and pulling the old sensor out still attached to the wiring and let the whole tank drain into a bucket I placed underneath.

I plugged the new sensor in, put the new o ring on and slotted in back in then locking it in with the black c clip and filled the tank with g12.

The car for the first few minutes sounded rough, but then went back to normal, scanned for codes and none have appeared.

Thanks for the help guys
