Defcon5
Was it a genuine VW thermostat? What do you mean it overheated a 'couple of times' every time you drove it?What do you call overheating? Temp at 100 or steam pissing out of every seal?
Mike Lupo
thermostat is from Eurocarparts but seemed fine when fitting it basically if i drive the car i get about 2 miles until the temp gauge is flashing and i then pull over and let it cool downit doesn't steam because i stop before it rises any further
madmanncfc
Id suggest the following.Replace the temperature sensor with a genuine vw oneTest the thermostat in boiling water too see if it opensIf its not fixed after that id suggest a flow issue and check the waterpump as these can go bad and no longer supply enough pressure and check the radiator for blockages. Mike Lupo
how can i go about checking the water pump?
madmanncfc
Visually inspect the pump itself too see if there are leaks around it. Check the pulley for play by rocking it back and forth. If that all checks out then squeeze the top radiator hose when it's idling then get a mate to rev the engine. You should be able to feel the pressure pushing back when you squeeze.Hope that helps
