Not sure about these, but in classic minis they used to jump out of... ermm... 4th due to worn engine mounts; particularly the rear tie bar.

I would get them checked over before thinking gearbox. Is there any excess movement in your engine when you rev it?

hi

we have a w plate 1.0 lupo which had probs with jumping out of 5th gear.

took it to local gearbox specialist.

he removed gear box end plate and found 5th gear, bearing, sychro and selector fork excessive worn.

said it was because oil had leaked out through selector seal which is at bottom of box,

first thing to go is 5th gear as it is highest up in the box.

cost us £200 to fix as he had another gearbox which he used for donor parts.

this there any chance of changing just 5th gear cos i had the selector changed

do you mean the selector mechanism from the gear lever to gearbox?

would be best to change 5th gear, the bearing, sychro and the fork which moves the sychro,

as i think they all wear to each other.gearbox guy said he has done a few vw gearboxes with same fault.

I would say this is the most likely suspect, but IIRC the selector mechanism on some of the older polos have a weak point which break off, which causes fifth to pop out or become unselectable (someone on here might be able to shed some more light on this).

I have not done much work on the smaller gear boxes, but on the bigger boxes if the 5th/6th gear selector is not set up right it can cause problems, if anyones had the box apart recently i would take it back to them personally.
