<3Lupo
hi, looking at buying a Lupo 1.4E 75bhp. I've been reading about the piston ring problem, but I'm not clear as to whether it affects that engine or if it is only the Sportthanks
Defcon5
Yeah, they are very similar engines.
<3Lupo
ok thanks, best avoided then.how far does this VAG 1.4 engine problem extend ? Theirs loads of Seat Ibiza 1.4's 2004 onwards , do they all suffer the same problem ?also the Arosa 8V engines, do they suffer from it ?just looking for a cheap/reliable/safe automatic city run around. pro3mark
If the car has been looked after, it shouldn't affect it.If you read it, it's a negative view, not many people will start a thread/website to say something hasn't happened
nfbr
TBF, I work solely with VAG engines and I've only ever seen one engine with this "Piston ring problem"

funkycooljem
well my sport had it except it wasnt the piston rings it was the whole bottom end, the pistons and cylinders had gone oval. because its a nickle plated engine it couldnt be re-boared so i had to have a whole new bottom end. the main symptoms are black spotting up the rear of the car and excessive oil consumption, mine was to the extent that i had to fill up with oil every time i filled up with petrol! as long as there isnt any sign of black spots up the back after its been taken for a good hard drive it should be ok.
