  1. no oil pressure, Oil light was flashing, it sounded really noisey. like there was no oil at top of engine. was caused by a blocked oil way, took it apart and fixed cleared them. (that makes it sound easy) what do you mean by sounds like a diesel? just the tappety engine noise? you can take the cam carrier off to see the tappets, followers lifter etc. its a cam belt off job though.
  2. Mine sounded like that when the oil pressure was bad. get an oil presure test done.
  3. Thanks guys for your input on my "oil not getting to top of engine thread" The car has sat for month but you two inspired me to take it apart. I took of the head and found the oil way (also stud hole i think) had a small amount of filter material in. Blew head oil ways out with air, put it back together and its up and running. quiet running and no oil pressure problems. Nice one SB
  4. For those of you that have rebuilt your engines. What type of sealant did you use under the cam carrier? It need to be Anaerobic (i think) all i can find that may be suitable is loctite 510 thanks
  5. Does anyone have any exploded drawings or diagrams of lupo engines? Im trying to work out oils paths in the 1.4 ahw engine. I have the haynes manual for this engine but the manuals are not as good as they used to be and there isnt any diagrams showing this. If anyone knows of any online, ( yes i have looked) please let me know. Thanks Sb
  6. finally got the cam carrier off today, its been sitting for months now. Is the gauze filter only on the gti's? Doesnt seem to be one on mys 1.4 ahw engine. Also when running oil does come out of the pressure switch hole, but not as much as id expect. I tried turning engine by hand when its all apart and am getting no oil showing in the top of head. Is this just because hand turn is not fast enough or should i see some oil anyway. PS No swarf in there or broken followers etc
  7. Ive done it on my 1.4 there is no gasket. just gasket paste which you can get from VW about £15 a tube
  8. Sounds similar. i believe its had a lack of servicing in the past, first car i have brought with no service history should have asked this question before i changed the oil pump
  9. thats what im trying to find out before i waste my time looking into it. it runs fine, pulls hard still its just noisy as hell from the top end. No oil leaks, no blue smoke. Im not afraid to get the spanners dirty (im more used to rebuilding aircooled VW engines though) but not if im wasting my time with an engine thats too far gone. Ill just break or sell it.
  10. Thats not bad from memory thanks for all your replies. I guess i have to decide if im going to take the head off etc and have a look. If there was debris in the oil from the filter i guess the gauze could be blocked. I havent had a pressure test done since i did the pump as its so noisey and the light comes on very quickly. There were no visable oil leaks from seals filter etc. I have not had the car long and it just happened one day while driving, after spending out on the electrical fault and to have the sump pick up checked. The garage said it would cost so much to do the pump etc that i could get a used engine for less. Thats why i changed the pump myself. I really dont want to spend any more money on it, but guess looking inside couldnt hurt, as long as i can get time to do it. What gaskets etc would i need, apart from head gasket.
  11. That sounds like my leon. it has done if for ages, I would say it was the tensioner pulley, it may not have been done when the belt was changed
  12. It was cleaned and checked and re fitted by the garage. I also checked it when i had the sump off for oil pump.
  13. Have posted on here a few times while trying to sort out this issue. Lupo 1.4s Ahw engine DOHC 16v. - oil light came on so went to garage, they said filter had colapsed internally, checked and cleaned pick up, filter and oil change. pressure improved but not enough, light come on when warm, noisey at top end. I have changed the oil pump this week (eventually) fresh oil, started it up and its no different, possibly worse, top end sounds like there is no oil getting there at all. Does anyone have any other ideas, (complete strip down is not going to happen as i dont have time or space) If i cant get it sorted then its going to go. Thanking you
  14. wow, thanks very much for the offer, I may take you up on that will see how doing it up again goes today. Im near gatwick so not far
  15. sorted it. had to upgrade to larger bolts on my locking tool as they were bending
  16. Be interesting to hear what you find. I have a similar problem with a recently brought 1.4s. was fine then one day the light starts flashing. I have low oil pressure and an internally colapsed crappy filter. Have had the wiring checked and the oil presure. Had the pick up cleaned, it helped a bit but not enough. Im now half way through changing the oil pump in my garage. Its been a bit of a mission.
  17. Ok so the 1.4s lupo has been sitting off road for 3 weeks as the oil presure is very low. The top end of engine is noisey. Oil filter had collapsed so Had the pick up checked and cleaned, not enough improvement, have bee told its probably a damaged pump. Is there anywhere other than the oil presure switch i can test for pressure? to see if the pump is ok. My prpblem is this, have started taking it apart to replace pump, having problems with the bottom pulley. Have made a locking tool as described in the haynes manual, but am still having trouble with the nut. I just wondered if there were any tricks to get this off. thanks SB
  18. I had a similar fault on my 1.4 When accelerating it would have one big stutter,/ hestiation before going. Turned out to be a fault in the wiring going to the ECU and a map senosr was replaced then it ran fine.
  19. Acording to haynes the pressure relief valve and springs are part of the pump. you can check them by removing the pump and back cover. However they are not avalible to replace you have to change whole pump. So may as well change the lot, and flush it out.
  20. Hi Yeah i was thinking it could be in any of the oil pathways. Its still at the workshop but i will check the valve when i get it back. I was advised it may take a full strip down to i dentify problem. as ive only had it a short time and its meant to be a cheap run around thats notgoing to happen ( it would be ceaper to replace the engine). Its done 63k but has little service history Yes 1.4 AHW so the DOHC i think
  21. Cant seem to find my other threads about the problems i was having with poor running. Turned out to be a map sensor and faulty wiring in the plug to ECU causing 2 of the pins to go to ground. Anyway got that sorted and running fine, then oil light flashes. Long story short, it has 0.5 bar at cold instead of 2. further investigation shows the oil filter internals have colapsed and gone everywhere. Had the pick up pipe checked and it was a bit sludged up, now get 0.7 bar. Suspected damaged pump I cant afford to get the garage to change oil pump and not be a guaranted fix. Was going to have a go at changing it (im not afraid of spanners have built a few aircooled vw engines) just wondered if anyone has done it or has any tips.
  22. My 1.4s is in the garage getting the running problems sorted. I was wondering if the rear discs from a sport will fit the S. How much of the setup i would need. Im guessing the hub carriers would have to be changed. will the sports fit the s/ If anyone knows, let me know. so i can work out if its worth doing thanks
