tdi exhaust note?

Hi all I have been looking at having a custom exhaust made by powerflow for my tdi but I was just wondering what sort of sound would come out of it I dont want to sound like a corsa with scooby exhaust on, just a sporty note.

I have seen a few vids on youtube of tdi exhausts and they have a high pitched whistle, like this

which I love, would the little 3 pot loop have the same noise? had any one got a vid of theirs?

Also is it illegal to decat a diesel as it needs a smoke test not an emmisions test? And what sort of bore could I have?

Cheers.

Hi there,

It isn't illegal to de-cat a diesel engine at the moment.

A de-cat and a centre resonator bypass would be the best way to optain the sound you are after. As for the diameter of the pipe bore, this is something you would want to leave upto a custom exhaust specialist as they will know what is best for your car.

Back when I had my Lupo TDI, I removed the cat and the rear silencer replacing them with straightpipes (I.e. no boxes) although I did keep the centre resonator. It did sound pretty cool but the videos I have got of it are over 50meg each in size!!!

Cheers Al, was it not really loud when you had straight through pipes? I decated my pervious car and my god was it loud it used to scare little children playing in the street lol. I might get a quote from powerflow and see what they say about bore size.

Will also keep you in the "loop" olly, lol.

The derv engine isn't that loud compaired to the petrol engine. If you start a petrol car up without the manifold on it is going to be very loud but the derv engine isn't really loud.

I had a Astra 2.0 DTI and I had a cat-back exhaust fitted. Under load it did sound good (no vids of this).

This is a vid of my Corsa pre centre silencer.

In time I might be getting a cat-back for the Arosa.

Tom's dad had an arosa TDI and his backbox fell off... He didn't notice any different :)

Iv done the same as Al with his lupo, only increased bore by about half an inch.. one small centre box, no cat, and no tailbox... sounds great :)

and also just for you al the BMC has gone :P does pull better without!

I'd love another loop TDI. I rekon I could get 125/130bhp out of one with what I know now. Maybe even 200lb/ft

You can practice on mine lol. What would your plans be if you had a Tdi?

hmm, Custom de-cat downpipe (2.125") with a cat-back system (no centre silencer). Removal of all turbo/pipework intercooler and inlet manifold with a full clean up, completely re-designed airbox, slightly thicker core intercooler in original position with aluminium end caps not plastic ones as per OEM intercoolers, all possible pipework replaced with Silicon/aluminium then it'd just be a case of custom mapping to suit.

My previous one got to 117bhp with just a backbox removal, BMC replacement filter and a custom map.

Whilst keeping the standard turbo?

Wow I bet that would set me back a couple of grand I best start saving lol cheers dude

125bhp should be attainable with the O.E. turbo.

Most of the work would be down to the fueling getting it to match the modifications done to the Intake, cooling, hoses and exhaust.
