DJ
OK since upgrading to the TDi I have a few questions to ask of other TDi owners after a week of driving:Firstly does it really take so long for the engine to warm up? The petrol Lupo would be at the usual 90 degrees by the time I hit the dual carrige way outside of my work and would sit perfectly happy at that. Last night on the way home the TDi didn't reach 90 degrees until far later on in my journey, OK so it was a lot of `stop-start` in stationary traffic but it seemed to take longer to warm up.Secondly, I thought the whole point of the diesel was for fuel economy, (and a wee bit of turbo added in style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> ) I seemed to be getting better milage with the petrol than I am with this. OK I understand it is a new car and needs time to run in, at this point it is still sitting at under 300 miles and has demolished nearly a whole tank in that time. With it being a new engine I am not thrashing it for a bit so just taking it steady, I assume that it will improve over time?Or am I just being over cautious? Crusoe
Yes, diesel cars usually take quite a bit longer to heat up, more metal in the engine as they have to cope with higher pressure and the fuel ignites at a lower temperature. When cold the economy is similar to that of the petrol, so i wouldn't expect you to see much improvement on stop start short journeys though the engine will loosen up an probably give a rise of `5-10mpg` over the next few thousand miles. Worth checking your tyre pressure though which might be a bit low, people using BP ultimate diesel have also reported more power and better economy over the cheaper stuff. DJ
Cheers mate. Tyre pressure should be fine as it was just serviced last week (assuming that Specialists did a good job) and have yet to fill it up as it came with whatever generic brand Specialists were giving me for free!Watch this space... Jabo
I ma getting ~300miles from 27 litres of Diesel, I let it warm up (pissing all the other drivers in the morrning) then drive economically for the most of the to and from work journey but alwyas give it the max throttle for some time causing trademark jaw dropping from many drivers in MUCH more expensive cars LOL
