High mileage 1.0 MPi's

Recommended Posts

Well - Im currently looking at Lupo's and Arosa's of the 1.0 variety as a daily driver and runabout. My pride and joy's a '95 Mazda RX7 (FD), so this is a little side project due to the fact that I have a soft spot for VW's. Im after the 1.0 MPi because of the frugal fuel economy... well to be honest its hard to be worse that 13MPG!!

I've not got a huge budget for it, being a runabout, and the object of the exercise it so save myself money over a 3 year period. Ive already worked out that if I spend about a grand on the car, to buy, run and insure it as well as the RX7, it'll actually save me £175 per month!

Now the thing is - Ive seen some examples with high miles, which look quite clean and tidy (obviously Id go over them with a fine tooth comb before buying them!) but I was wondering ow the little 1.0 engines cope with the miles? I'm hoping that VAG engineering was living upto its reputation when they designed/built it!

So - what should I be looking for on engines with over 100k miles? Will these engines be ok with this kind of mileage at all (if regularly serviced and cared for)? Anyone any idea how much a low mileage replacement lump would set me back roughly?

Ive seen 1.0 Arosas and lupos with high mileage before. With mileage from 140K to 165K iirc.

So they should be good for it yeah, the 1.0 engines are generally the bomb proof ones with both 1.4 petrols being the less reliable ones!

Just remember, cambelts are due every 40k or 4 years! It was changefd from 60k/6 years.

Superb - well that's encouraging news! If push comes to shove I dont mind dropping a new engine in if/when required, but I'm glad its likely to be pretty sound in the first place! I think first order of the day will be full service, fluids and cambelt change regardless of where I get it from.

Thanks!

does this count for 1l cars that have been abused too?? "bomb proof" i mean i think the engine of a car i was looking at was ok(ish) but i think the bodywork was bad, like im talking very bad, like someone has purposely damaged the wing mirrors, interior handles missing/broken off etc.. but the car is for cheap. if i VAGCOM the engine you think this is an accurate enough reading? or should i just step away from the purchase?

when purchased i wouldnt mind about cosmetic damage as i was looking to upgrade most bits etc, but mecanically i need a sound engine. grr i hate buying cars.

To be honest if I had a Lupo shell I would immediately slap a 1.3 8v polo mk2 engine in it with a weber dmtr carburettor conversion. Once that engine was up to temperature i used to rip the sh*t out of it every day and it just took it. Nothing ever went wrong with it. not one single god damn thing.

Give it a basic service and it will show you some lurve.

Although that engine in the car it was designed for would be ten times more fun than any lupo.

check for a clunky gearbox, the linkages are the main issues i've heard of.

First to revearse is normal, mine did it from new.

In the 35k miles i did in the car in the first two years excluding the 10k oil changes it did not use a drop of oil.

As i knew i would change the engine at some point, it was thrashed from new, and when cold.

Excluding the lambda sender, nothing else went wrong.

I dont think i've heard of a single engine failure, i could not even sell the 35k mile engine, after the gearbox sold i told the rag and bone man to take it away!

May be worth trying uk-polos.net as the engine was also used in the 6n2 polo, as there's more of them on the road they may be able to offer more of a long term review.

Welcome though but, any pics of the 'real' car?

Hmm, well its condition is probably due to careless people, who probably havent given it its proper servicing. Does it have service history?

There was an 04reg 1.0S Arosa on ebay just about a week back. With 144K on the clock! Thats some going for any 04 reg car!. It shows it lasts though, and i wouldnt have even minded buying it just to see how much longer it would run for.

If they are looked after they should run and run, but if not then its just like any car, and will start to show signs of poor servicing when it starts to burn oil etc. If its well looked aftre then i wouldnt be put off by a high mileage car.

TBH the one your looking at does sound a bit rough, and if its not dirt cheap i would walk away.

When i was asking around about my 'problem' engine, i was told by VW specialists that the 1.0 is the better engine and its the 1.4s which cause the problems. There are quite a few cases i can think of on here who have had problems with their 1.4.

I dont think i've heard of a single engine failure, i could not even sell the 35k mile engine, after the gearbox sold i told the rag and bone man to take it away!

You have obviously forgotten about me then!

My 1.0S had a replacement brand new engine under warranty at 25000 miles. Its now on 39000 miles and its been faultless ever since then.

Ive never heard of another 1.0 failing, and give it its due it didnt actually die, i was still using it up until it got changed (albeit the seat dealer had it for 3 months!).

It could have been fixed but they simply wouldnt listen to me. I thought it was a sticking valve lifter causing the problems (would practically run on 3 cylinders when hot, shudder when in traffic, do about 30MPG and was so slow, i mean slow!) but that was never checked.

They tried all sorts of things with it (skimmed the head TWICE!, lapped the valves in god know how many times, left the engine in the car with the head off with the car stood in the outside carpark, so obivoulsy it was getting filled with dust.)

After my complaining about this and how much wear they have induced on my 25,000 mile engine, SEATUK requested the dealer fit a new engine.

So i think it was a pretty one off thing and mainly down to an utterly useless dealer.

Although im unlucky with everything so thats probably just me

Not had any other problems though, my 1.0 never uses any oil at all and uses no coolent either.

For a 1.0 its not a bad engine when its running as it should, my car is far nipper now than it ever ha been, and its not all that slow really, it just doesnt like hills too much but its perfect really, i dont think im ever going to sell it! ;)

... thanks.

the car turned out to be a Cat D going cheap for £1500ish 53 plate. ...think i wont be buying that though, so im still on the look out for a decent car, was looking more into the sdi's or 1.2/1.4's tbh. now i know im def lokking for a full service history car.

Yeah best avoided i think!

You carnt get a 1.2, it goes 1.0, 1.7SDi, 1.4 75, 1.4 TDi, 1.4 100, 1.6 GTi.

There was a mk1 arosa SDi on piston heads (not sure if its still there) looks smart though, with the mk2 alloys and a nice green colour. Was quite cheap i think.

EDIT: It is still on: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/361725.htm - £1200

Seems like a pretty good car, and only run in with that mileage!
