I wrote off my husband's rather lush BMW 323i se last September on the A1, only about 20 miles away from home. I had our 3 children in the car with me. I had overtaken a car and had a motorbike appear out of nowhere behind me (he was obviously speeding), the car that I was overtaking was near my passenger side rear end... then I saw some rubble in the road and although I swerved to avoid it, I still hit some - the car just seemed to lift and I slammed sideways into the central reservation at about 50mph... Someone must have been watching over us that day, as the car just bounced off and I managed to pull over at the side of the road - however, the other drivers around me didn't stop - even to check that we were ok (which really did upset me as they had seen the accident). I have been told by several people that I was exceedingly lucky the car didn't roll, and that we would have been seriously injured as a result if it had. My teenage daughter (who was in the front passenger seat) still jumps when I go to overtake a car and the central reservation is near us... the only physical damage to us was me (I bruised a couple of ribs where the arm rest was pushed in by the impact on the door). There was so much damage it was an instant write-off - every driver's side panel from the front indicator through to the back indicator, bumpers, doors, the suspension was ripped apart on the driver's side and even the INSIDE of the engine bay was damaged. The photo's don't look too bad, it was much worse "in the flesh". Looking at the close-up photo's you can actually see the indents of the bolts that hold the barrier metal together. The moral of the story.... don't tailgate other drivers! I wasn't tailgating anyone, but I've learned from my experience and leave more room now - after all, if there hadn't been a bike right in my boot, I could have braked and avoided the whole accident... I drove past the spot the other week and felt physically sick at what could have happened.
