  1. Is it just difficult to select a gear, or takes some effort to move the stick from any position to any position?

Just wondering if it's the selector mech system or if the clutch isn't fully disengaging (needing adjustment or pedal box...). Might be a cracked pedal box- the clutch pedal rests at a lower position when gone.

When my pedalbox went, it was really difficult to select first from neutral, when the car was stationary. And it wore out the synchro rings (discovered when rebuilding the box). The clutch was always lightly dragging the primary shaft, because it was running all the time, preventing the gears to mesh.

You'll need a special puller for 5th gear. I posted some pics on the gearbox thread when one of mine was rebuilt. 👍🏻

  2. Do you mean stiff clutch pedal or difficult to move gear stick? Two totally different problems, causes and fixes.

If the box is coming out, makes sense to have the bearings and seals all replaced, especially if you'll be keeping the car for a few years. Bearings and seal kit about £125. Labour cost, once the box is out, around £75 and a pack of beer for the guy doing it... :)

  3. Yeah, so a fuel problem now. Easy to fix.

Fuel? Fuel pump? Fuel filter? Fuel pressure regulator? Fuel pump control relay? Fuel signal control connection from the ECU to the fuel control relay? Fuel pump fuse?

[Main power supply bus to power rail for power on system (probably none of these if there's ignition)? Main power supply bus fuse? Main power relay? Main power relay control signal from ECU? Ignition switch?]

  4. This breaks for everyone. It's been a few years since I broke one, but I think it's the spindle that breaks, not the handle? The handle has a little hidden push button release thing (that you only discover after you've broken it...).

I'm not completely sure, but I think the golf handle is different, but the spindle is the same. I posted pics on here a few years ago showing my mistakes and there may have been a mk4 handle.

  5. Welcome to Club Lupo :)

Sounds like you're doing all the correct research before spending your money. Smart move. We did have a buyers guide on here until the site crashed and we lost everything, but yeah, sounds like you're doing your research.

There are a lot of really smart Lupo/Arosa people on here, with combined knowledge better than most vdub/seat main dealers. Ask away, you will get the answer.👍🏻

If you had your original account banned before even posting, we've had a huge surge in Russian 'bot attacks' over the last two weeks, where we've been doing everything we can to keep the site clean and SPAM free. Myself or one of the other mods may have accidentally removed it. PM me if you remember the username and would like it reinstated...

  6. Might be a faulty light switch unit?

To remove it, press the switch in- and while pressing in, turn the switch on. This releases the switch from the holder :)

Then pull it straight out. Then you can disconnect the wires and plug.

  7. If no mileage indication, then power is not getting through from the battery to the "off" circuit. Basically like the battery has been removed from the car (or disconnected). Yeah, I'd check carefully around the main fuse block on top of the battery. Those Ali fuses can develop hairline cracks.

I'm guessing that the car was working just fine before you swapped the battery?

  8. You use a screwdriver covered in tape (to avoid scratches), and lever the plastic lamp holder thing from the rear small end. It's spring loaded. One end is spring loaded, the other isn't. If it hasn't been replaced before, the spring loaded end is towards the rear. But it can fit either way round. If you need to force it, try the other end. It needs very little effort.

They often split and water gets in. But they are cheap to replace.

  9. Well this is an interesting idea. I did the first 4x4 Corrado swap (using a crashed Golf Rallye as a base). Had to do the same thing as the standard car didn't come with all the mountings. But the wheelbase was the same, as was the width.

I think you'll have a fair bit more work to do... I also think you'll need to move the firewall? Please post lots of pics!

And welcome to Club Lupo :)

    pics of your Lupo?

  10. The bolt holes in the headlight unit are slotted exactly for that reason. My method is to fit them finger tight, hold the rest of the body panels in place and gently move them to the right spot, then tighten properly.

You can do it again by removing the bumper to access the two bolts at the front. Yeah it's a pain.

  11. Wow. Sounds like you need a mechanically minded car friend...! Such simple small issues but devastating.

You simply need someone to go to a breakers yard or used car parts specialist and get the bits you need, fit them just to have decent fully functioning car again. Grilles are available everywhere, as are used bonnet releases/catches.

In the first instance, I'd be tempted to find a different small, independent garage where they're happy to use used parts. I wouldn't have gone back to the place you went to. There are a lot of smaller places that are happy to work on classic cars- that's the first question I'd be asking. Seriously, before thinking about getting rid of it, talk to a "new" place. Lupos (and Arosas) are really simple cars and generally are very easy to maintain and repair.

The problems you're describing on your 1L beast are very typical, common and an easy fix (have a look through older posts describing the exact problems you've had). My first thoughts are coolant temp sensor, thermostat, crank sensor. Cheap and cheerful 😁 repairs.

  12. Implausible usually means shorted or disconnected. Basically, the ECU is seeing input voltage signals, but they're beyond "extreme" limits. Lambda (or Oxygen) sensors are pretty much indestructible, so I'll be interested if swapping it works.

But it could be the input side is being tricked, and more fuel is being injected than the system is meant to be injecting- often caused by a faulty temp sensor. Have you looked at the plug tip colour after a run?

And welcome to Club Lupo :)
