  1. Oops! I could have made a little mistake there then! I was hoping that all the tuned tdi guys, especially the guy with 117bhp, were going to tell me that the torque from the Tdi was doing the business and kicking 16v ass. I may have a spare TDi engine for sale pretty soon then. I just hope someone outbids me. Ha!
  2. Will a 1.4 Tdi remapped be quicker than a std 1.6 16v over a lap? Jabba estimate about 120bhp and 190 lbft race spec for a 1.4 Tdi with the std turbo. V's the 16v with minor mods to 130bhp. But I'm not quite decided what to race. They're different race series but just I wanna have fun so either will do. Anyone ever compared on or off track?

1.4 is definitley the route i'm going to take now. 160-170 bhp would be fantastic but anywhere around 140bhp would be a great result. The VW cup racing is so competitive now that you have to be bang on the maximum hp/torque you can get otherwise you're miles off the pace. I'm looking forward to hearing back from Jabba on what they can do!

Fair enough. It was a long shot. I'm planning to race my Lupo again this season and I was thinking of alternatives to the 1.6 16v route. If I could get enough power and torque from a 1.4 TDi i'd go for that. I've asked Jabba for their best power for a race spec engine, so we'll see what they can suggest. 130 hp and bags for torque would be great!

Has anyone put a turbo on this engine? I was wondering whether there was a turbo conversion somewhere using other VW diesel turbo parts

  7. Hi Mate. I reckon I've had the most power out of a gti engine. I raced it in the VW cup a couple of seasons ago. I limited it to 7,400 revs and had a comfy 185 bhp. Taking the limiter up would easily have found another 10 hp. Apart from my engine, I do know that VW motorsport in Germany had a 220 bhp version but they had real problems with cams and followers failing. Get your cheque book ready because neither option was cheap!
  8. I've got what I think is the fastest naturally aspirated Lupo out there. Currently I've limited the power by limiting the revs. I have rolling road tested it at 185bhp @ 7500 rpm. More power is available, it's just a matter of how reliable it would be if I let it have another 1000 revs. We saw over 190 bhp when we let it go up to 8000. As ever, big power doesn't come cheap so be prepared for frequent visits to the bank manager! Basically you need to start with the 1400 engine and head. The 1600 head has limitations. I know. as I tried that first. Even VW Motorsport in Germany had trouble getting the 1.6 valve gear to be reliable. They did offer to supply me a prepared engine and head but only on the basis the I leased it and returned it to them whenever there was a problem. Expensive and a big hassle. With a change of crank and rods from the 1600 to the 1400 and some new pistons you get 1600 or a little more with an overbore. It's not too tricky but there are some bits which I ended up getting fabricated like the exhaust and inlet manifold. Apart from that it was off the shelf.
  9. I've got the opposite problem as my race car is too long geared. What I can tell you is that I have tried pretty much all of the boxes available, which all interchange by the way, as evidenced by the 3 spare boxes I now have, and the longest final drive I have found is 3.6 with the shortest at 4.2. The shortest, 4.2, still gives me around 20 mph per 1000 revs which would equate to 100 mph at 5000rpm. the longest will give me around 24mph per k. I am ruunning on 205/50/15. To overcome my problem I am going to have to get some 14 inch rims instead it seems. But if anyone ever comes across a close ratio set for the lupo or polo box I would be interested to know.
