Lupo gti engine temperature

Hi, after some advice. My gti takes about 5 minutes or a few miles to reach 90 on the temp gauge, but recently the fan has started kicking in for short periods whilst stationery at 90. I only do short journeys 5 miles each way to and from work. My coolant level is at maximum and level has not changed since buying car in January, its a good clean pink colour and not appearing oily. There is some white gunk under the oil filler cap but the oil on dipstick is fine, but have read it does not mean head gasket, plus it only seems to put out white smoke when warming up, much like plenty of other cars I see on the road. Engine is really warm after short journeys when I open the bonnet.

I am going to clean out the gunk from oil filler cap and neck before driving to Stanford Hall on Sunday to give the car a good run. Could it be head gasket or am I just worrying?

hi mate mine was doing the same loads of gunk under the oil cap and my temp was reading 70's changed the temp sensor £5 off ebay and gave it a good run as i was only doing few miles here and there. Everything is spot on now could just be the warmer weather kicking in?
