Ratboy!
Hi, newbie here. Recently purchased an Arosa 1.0sIt was driving fine until I decided to take are of the rocker cover oil leak - Instant Fail!!Didn't realise that the rocker cover held the cam in. Got a mechanic mate round who told me to leave it and he would sort it. Next day he came back and fitted new timing belt kit, water pump, sealed the rocker cover, changed oil, all filters and spark plugs (NGT plugs used)On starting the car it was running very rough. Mechanic thought ht leads. Today I got the new leads and fitted then - still running rough. Code reader showed Misfire Cylinder 4I cleared the code and swapped over the HT Leads from cylinders 3 and 4. Code reader again showed misfire cylinder 4. I then swapped spark plugs over from 3 and 4. Still showing misfire Cylinder 4. I've checked all plugs against the block and they are all sparking Plug 4 smells of fuel when removed. Any ideas folks? Thanks, Brian.
Defcon5
So it was fine, then your mate changed the cambelt on your driveway, and now it won't run properly.Hmmmm
Ratboy!
My thoughts indeed mate. Do these symptoms have anything in common with the timing belt being changed? I have to say he is a real mechanic - employed by a nearby reputable garage.
Defcon5
I would suggest if the timing is slightly out it will cause a misfire.Did he do it with the proper locking tools etc?

I have to say he is a real mechanic - employed by a nearby reputable garage.I might be that, it could be something else. I'm not sure about this engine but on some engines they need proper locking tools and are very sensitive to timing. Just because he is a mechanic doesn't mean he is a specialist on all cars. Hope you get it sorted easily though.
Ratboy!
Thanks guys. He's coming back tomorrow night to have a look as he ran out of time yesterday. I'll put this to him and see what he says. Failing that, I have a VW specialist nearby - would it merely be a case of taking it to him to have the timing adjusted or is it more complicated than that? Ratboy!
Cheers for that - might ditch this guy in favour of the specialist. Much obliged - great site this!
Ratboy!
What about driving it 8 miles to the specialist? Edited March 19, 2013 by Ratboy!
Defcon5
I'd let your mate look at it first then see what the score is
Ratboy!
Right, script is - timing is fine- compression to cylinder 4 isn't! Looks like the hydraulic lifters in the head are either not seated/sitting right or goosed. It's getting stripped down over the next few days to see what's what. At the worst it'll need a recon head methinks - hopefully not though!Still a great wee machine.
Defcon5
Yet it was fine before the cambelt was changed? That's quite a coincidence

Ratboy!
Yes indeed - we live and learn don't we! Hopefully be back up and running soon enough. Once the engine is sorted it's on to the stiff gear change!

gernster
so basically he screwed the timing up and bent the valves in number 4 chamber, hence no compression. I'd be kicking his @ss pretty hard if I were you!
