leapingfrog
I recently purchased a lupo 1.0 petrol manual, the car can drive a little but then its be unable to move. I removed the clutch to check if it was ok, it seemed to have enough meat on it but there was oil on it and also the flywheel. I have a replacement clutch to put in, but i'm not sure what seal has failed to cause the oil, do you think the gearbox seal has failed from my picture? I'm not sure how to check the rear main seal as that is behind the flywheel, any tips? many thanks
mk2
Yeah, remove that releaser guide tube and swap out the seal... Welcome to club Lupo pics of car?

leapingfrog
Here is a nice picture of my flywheel, i wanted to check if the main seal was also leaking... Decided to take it off so i could look at the back of the flywheel, then here is the rear main seal... i've got a new gearbox seal ordered, do you guys think it's worth replacing the rear main seal? Many thanks
mk2
Well yeah, now that you're there, you may as well change the rear oil seal- only a fiver. Actually, on your engine I think it's a fair bit more work. Strike that... (need to remove sump, rear shield, ali casting and timing ring?) All looking good though! Look at those balancing grooves on the back of the flywheel. Wow. One of my SDIs is the same colour
leapingfrog
Did a bit more cleaning today... oil everywhere I think the rear main seal is just 8 bolts, two on the sump and the rest just comes off with some gasket. I need to order that part in then should be able to put the car back together next weekend and cross my fingers and toes 😁 Do wonder if somebody has been spilling oil when filling up as there is an oil path all the way down from the cap, else that seal is leaking, but i guess i'll discover that later on. leapingfrog
Other faults with the car that i'm aware of is the radio doesn't work ( i checked the fuse in the dash and it's alright) could be worth switching out, also i would like to replace the seats as they are pretty bad, does anyone have any suggestions on a replacement radio and seats? I could always go down to a salvage yard for the seats if i know which ones would fit. BTW this is my very first VW car 😃 Kind regards
mk2
Mk4 golf front seats fit... Heavy though. If you fit a non vdub radio, you need an antenna power inserter thing, as the antenna needs power to work (on FM). Check that there's power at the radio socket as its unusual for them to fail. leapingfrog
Hello wanted to give an update to my lupo adventure 😀 I got the car back together today, new clutch, new rear main seal and gearbox input oil seal (worried i knocked in it a bit too far) and gearbox shaft seal. I managed to get the car out of my garage and drive it down the road shifting through the gears just fine, but unfortunately it still was driving really slow. I found out that the car was only running on two cylinders, and 3/4 spark plugs was covered in oil. I don't know much about this car as i've not really lived with it, but it looks like the engine oil was over filled by the dipstick, but to be fair there was oil all over the place so i think it's a combination of oil leaking spots. Anyhow, i cleaned up all the oil and could see that oil was leaking out of the fuel cap (gasket probably gone) and that breather vent at the top of the engine, so possibly this has worked it's way into cylinders 3/4 over time ? I also spotted the windscreen washer fluid container or pipe to the pump leaking (will tackle that another time). I cleaned up spark plug 3 and 4 then took the car for another drive, it was pulling a lot better and the engine felt smoother. I checked the spark plugs and all was dry expect for cylinder 3, so perhaps this has more residual oil in the cylinder still, or perhaps the gasket has failed and needs some RTV love 😄 Anyhow just wanted to share and show i didn't give up.... also my radio isn't working still i removed it and replace the 7.5amp fuse but still no joy, i'll have a better look at the fuse box.
