Today was rocker gasket day

You've anwered your own question, IMO you want to be seeing 14V or more under load (Lights/blowers/stereo on).
The battery clearly had enough power to allow you to complete your 50 miles as it was new, and it may well read as 12V when tested in situ/cold but I'll bet that if you left your multimeter on and turned the car over you'd see your voltage drop to 9V or below when cranking...
Time to start thinking about fitting your new alternator
-
Don't keep us in suspense...
Edit to say on the basis of no repsonse I'm going to assume your new vehicle is a Mazda 121
-
Apparently they're not a simple 'bolt in' replacement.... http://www.club323f.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37557
At any road not on 323's so the cross compatibility doesn't extend to seats unfortunately... What model's the new motor?
-
MX5's share loads of parts with 323's, not least the engine... The 1.6 MX5 lump is the same one found on the 323 turbo, although obviously less the turbo.

Do MK2 MX5 seats fit in a MK1 MX5?
Yes, same mounting points and no adaptation needed.
-
World's my oyster at the moment mate...
I've tried to persuade 'her indoors' that the Lupo is too small even for her needs now and I will pass on my Mk4 SDI complete with new wings/cambelt/LUK clutch/GTDi interior cupholders etc (It's lovely) and I'll move on to a Mk5 SDI which now seem to be firmly in the sub £1k bracket trade value as diesel becomes more and more of a dirty word....
Upshot is, she won't have it and has bonded with her little tractor in a way I'd never have sen coming (She's not really a car person). Weird right?
Either way, that still leaves me a space under the carport for something new.... Nice Mk1 TT 225, old Volvo estate, T4 camper, maybe even a LWB Pajero... Not really sure yet
-
And....
It's sold.
The car had started to see very little use On to pastures new

Fickr still works well, but yes the Photobucket fiasco seems to have provided what must surely be one of the last nails to the 'internet forum' coffin across the web as a whole.
Folk were already migrating to social media alternatives before the changes, the detailed and archived 'How to's' were the last trump card that forums had...

Point taken.

@JoeyEunos I was going to reply go aftermarket, but then I subsequently decided the question is a bit daft. It's been asked so many times, and it usually draws someone to say go OEM, me to say go aftermarket, and others to say use bits of both.
Meh, seemed like a perfectly sensible question to me.
I ran several searches and couldn't find any debate or discussion of this at all.... Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places?

Isn't how well a part fits part of it's 'quality'?
For the record I'm not trying to get into a bun fight over rocker cover gaskets, life's too short.
I'll get it done either this weekend or next, I might even take some pics for a 'how to' whilst I'm at it

i wonder where the elring branding idea came from?
probably another thread.
TBF you did call out Elring as a possible brand to use, albeit in another thread as you mentioned. As luck would have it they're the only one that ECP stock.
It's actually been a pretty testy morning for me so perhaps my mini-rant was slightly OTT, although it was intended to be tongue in cheek
I'll see how I get on...
-
Completely appreciate the point, but all gaskets aren't all of the same quality...
Aftermarket rocker gaskets on MX5's for example nearly always leak, the only solution being to go OEM. Having never done the job on the Lupo, I wondered if there were any similar experiences/knowledge the forum could offer...
Clearly the answer is either "We don't know", or alternatively it's a non issue and not worth discussing. Either way some insight was what my heart desired in this instance
-
Right, in the complete absence of any kind of response here I've gone for the 'Elring' gasket including the upper bolt seals from ECP for the pincely sum of £8.99 using todays 40% discount code
The silence on this topic was deafening, meanwhile I've watched threads about ill fitting heavy oversized wheels skyrocket RE replies. I wonder if I'd have done better with a question about which £150 Ebay coilovers would best 'improve' my handling...? This is probably as good of an insight/metaphor into the way the VAG scene works as anyone needs
Ah, well, I may well put a ring of gasket paste around the upper bolt seals for good measure and will endeavour to update this topic to make clear how the Elring gasket fits/holds up incase of the unlikely event that any future CL members who have an interests outside of the the usual bag it/sub in boot/16" wheels craic stumble across it
-
Guilty as charged, although a 'posh' Northerner somewhat of an oxymoron, like a 'giant' dwarf or a 'jumbo' shrimp

get whatever you fancy, maybe an elring?
just clean all surfaces, follow the torque sequence and don't overtighten it.
Torque sequence?
There are only three bolts that hold it on
I was just planning on 'going canny' and tightening each one a bit at a time until snug...
-
Good luck fella
Meanwhile, I need a rocker gasket for my SDI (I've started a thread and everything) Any thoughts on genuine vs aftermarket, eg Febi etc?
-
A look around Gumtree says different
Don't get me wrong traders etc might be asking for more on AutoTrader etc but those cars tend to be there for a long time and even then I'm sure they accept a fair bit less than advertised....
As a point of reference I sold our near mint 3 door 2001 1.4 on 93k with FSH from the day it was born for £600 in April 2015 and I felt that was strong money for what it was even then (I'd bought it for £650 to years before that.)
God loves a trier/every village has an idiot, so not it's impossible to eventually get more, but pretty time consuming I'd imagine.
-
We had 1.4 3 door for a couple of years, just as slow as the SDI but with more costly tax and dissapointing MPG
On the plus side it was reliable and sold for pretty much the same as I paid for it after two years of use. Also love the fact that even the cleanest/lowest milage 1.4/1.6 variants now seem firmly in the sub £500 braket, so they do make sense in some circumstances.
-
Thought you hated Mk4's (Despite driving/loving the infamously Mk4 platform based TT)?
What is it?
-
Bad timing for me... Would have thought @Rich might be interested though....
-
As per the title chaps
Approaching 140k and Mrs Eunos's SDI has developed a samll leak from both the upper bolt 'sealing ring' gaskets and also the rocker gasket itself. The geunuine parts run to about £55, where-as aftermarket Febi or FAI items come in at half the cost.
Some links to show what I'm looking at....
Has anyone here completed this task? Worth stumping the extra for the genuine parts or is aftermarket acceptable?
Also, I'd be grateful if anybody has access to the torque setting for the three rocker cover bolts
As always, thanks in advance for any wisdom/guidance/musings on this.
Sdi starting issue but ok with temp sensor unplugged

This isn't helpful in any way, but I'm intrigued as to how you came to discover it would start without the temp sensor in place?
