  1. ^ Firstly, thanks for the reply I'd sort of planned to do just that (Changing to 10w40) before the weather got colder, and I'll probably opt for Castrol GTX again. I was just curious as to what other folk were using TBH. I must admit that I find it slightly odd and off-putting that Eurocarparts list GTX 15w40 using my reg but not GTX 10w40 given that they're both VW 501 01/505 00 spec...
  2. Greetings all, thought it was about time I got a 'members cars' thread started for my little SDI. I picked her up earlier in the week for a fairly reasonable price, she's got 120k on the clock and has FSH and 11 months ticket I'd bought the car in search of the galactic levels of economy the diesel variants are capable of, although so far I seem to have spent most of my time worrying about every gearchange and awaiting iminent peddle box or gearbox failure, lol. At least the fact that the car was pretty cheap means I can decide to walk away should the worst happen! I hadn't really planned on any modding per se but TBH I always say that The story starts here...
  3. I know the SDI's take 4.7l right? I've just bought two 4l pails of Castrol GTX 15w40 'high milage', purely as EuroCarParts listed that as being apropriate for my car when using the reg but I'm now thinking it might be too thick and that a 10w40 or 5w30 might be better... Am I right in thinking VW 501 01/505 00 is the spec I need? As always, thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice!
  4. thanks, I'll have a butchers at it The weird thing is when moving the actual mirror about by hand the adjuster moves inside the car, but unfortuanetely it doesn't work the other way round
  5. As per the title really My Lupo SDI has manual wing mirrors and the adjustment 'toggle' inside the car is just hanging loose and doesn't actually feel as though it's connected to anything! At the moment I'm just winding down the window (Yes, winding because poverty spec!) and adusting the mirror itself by hand, not ideal.... My question is simple, do I need to replace the whole unit with second hand/replacement parts or is it possible to repair them? Also, I can't seem to find any 'how to' guides as to taking the mirrors off/apart... As always, thanks for any help/musings/suggestions or advice!
  6. Thats a massive help, I'm going to 100% copy/follow suit What brand of oil was it you used? Any chance of a link? FWIW the box on mine shows no signs of any leeking, in fact TBH it's the driest/cleanest looking box I've ever seen... My other cars are a 1989 MX5 and a 2001 Golf 1.4 16V and it puts them to shame with both respectively showing obvious signs of minor 'sweating' of oil, that's not to say that it isn't perhaps running on 0.5l of oil after 120k's worth of service though
  7. Thanks, and they're coming I'l start a thread for the car at the weekend probably
  8. Completely understand, recon boxes do seem slightly un-economical. Don't just leave us hanging! What is this wonder modification you speak of!? Your story brings me hope, thank you
  9. Kudos! 147k on the original gearbox makes you the leader so far If you don't mind me asking have you picked up a second hand 'box as a replacement, or is it a recon unit? If it's the former surely there's a chance it's no better than your existing one...?
  10. Hmmm, interesting. I'm thinking that at 120k it's quite likely mine has had the pedal box replaced already....? Am I right in thinking that there was a 'revised' predal box fitted as a replacement to avoid the same issue occuring in the future? RE gearboxes, what I'm really trying to ascertain really is what kind of milage is possible on the original box... Given my car's high milage it's a concern to me TBH.
  11. Hi Geoff, I'm in the North East too and have just picked up a 2001 SDI so this post is of interest to me! The mirrors on my (Manual) car don't adjust from in the cabin, it feels as though the actual linkages might be broken and adjustment basically entails sticking your hand out of the window and doing it that way Do you know whether I'd have to replace the whole wing mirror on both sides or can one just replace the mechanism? What colour are the mirrors you've got (My car's red)? I'm also after a set of the VW branded mud flaps and a pair of rear head rests in the beige/cream colour, if you can help with any of this then gie me a nudge... Thanks chap
  12. Recently (Ok very recently, actually yesterday ) I picked up my first Lupo, an SDI 2001 model with FSH and in great nick with a full years MOT but with 120K on the clocks for the princely sum of £550... For all I know it's had the gearbox done, although I suspect not as it looks very similar in the levels of oxidisation to the casing etc to the rest of the oily bits, same goes for the peddle box. I knew before I got into this about the inherent boggles with gearboxes and peddleboxes that blight the lives of many of you Lupo folk, but I bit the bullet anyway as frankly it was a very cheap car! None the less, I couldn't help wondering about just how common this is! Then it struck me, why not create a poll!? Are there any of you running high milage cars that haven't had to replace the gearbox and/or peddlebox? Is it pretty much a foregone conclusion that these will go at some point? Thanks in advance for any experiences/musings/insights!
  13. As per the title, hello all I'm a long time VAG enthusiast, perpetual MX5 fanboy and as of this morning the proud owner of a 2001 SDI!
